We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Bavishi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sophia, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Balance is something that has always been a struggle for me because I am a person that likes to invest their time 110%. I have been working on making my life more balanced, though, especially finishing college and being a musician. Being a creative and a student is all about balance. It is about finding the right mix between your homework and the music you want to work on. I have found it best to create more of a balance in life by creating a schedule that is detailed by the hour. I very much live by the hour because I am so busy and every minute counts. Having a calendar, either written or digital, works wonders! I was not always this balanced, and it was not till I started college that I realized I needed to make those changes.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a singer/songwriter and live-looping artist. I have always had a talent for singing and music, but I recently discovered a whole new world of performing. Specifically, live-looping and using Ableton Live to assist my live shows. When I perform, I use the Ableton Push 2 as my main piece of equipment. This allows me to live loop and layer tracks. I’ve been working on this for the last year and a half, and I have found it to really be a calling for me. It’s definitely something I see myself pursuing. I hope to eventually play at festivals and have larger live sets at festivals like Lollapoloza. I am still growing as an artist, and each day I am trying new things to help me grow and get my name out there. It has not been easy, and it has been very slow growth, but being an artist is what I want to do. I can’t see myself doing anything else. I have been taking the last few years to develop my brand, and I feel I have really started to solidify what it is. It was not easy at first, but after I discovered live digital performing and live looping, I really started to find my brand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Arizona is one of the most beautiful states, with some of the best sunsets. I spend lots of time in Downtown Phoenix, and it is one of the best places to have a week full of fun. There are some of the best restaurants, bars, and coffee shops to try. The first place I would have to take my best friend is Fairtrade coffee. Fairtrade has such delicious coffee, along with some of the best pastries and stuffed croissants. The next place would be Palma, which is a restaurant/bar in the heart of Downtown Phoenix. It has a great happy hour as well as beef bulgolgi nachos. Palma also has amazing DJs on the weekends. After Palma, we would walk around Roosevelt Street because there is so much art work painted along the walls. Lastly, we would end the night with dinner at Crescent Ballroom, which has the best drinks and burritos! They also have lots of live music almost every night.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout to my family: my mom, dad, and younger brother. I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am without them. They are my rocks. They are the people that have pushed me the most and supported me when no one else would. Going into a creative/artist-type of career is never easy, and to have parents that understand and fully support the career I want to pursue means so much. They were the ones who showed up to every performance, drove me to all my rehearsals, regardless of how far. I owe so much to them and I can’t wait till the day I can truly give back to them.
