We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Asmussen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steve, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Friends and family were always encouraging me to start my own pet photography business. Most of what I’d seen from other photographers were shot in bad studio settings with fake flowers and poor lighting. I knew I didn’t want to be one of those. I had seen the work of a Dallas photographer, Teresa Berg, and it was so fantastic I signed up for the workshop on pet photography she was offering in conjunction with two other photographers. They were incredibly helpful and inspiring.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Pet photography doesn’t always pay the bills. Other jobs along the way have helped fund my passion for pet photography, but also created complications in timing for photoshoots and separating work/life balance. Along the way I’ve learned to appreciate being in the moment the way our pets do. There’s no “what if I did something different last year” among animals. It’s all right here, right now.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I moved to Tucson for its vibrancy and diversity of culture. Tucson is a melting pot of old western cowboy, native Americans, snowbirds, college students, immigrants and transplants. There are so many great restaurants and it seems like there’s always a festival, art show, or farmer’s market happening.

Some of my favorite hikes include the trails in Sabino Canyon, Tucson Park West, or Tumamoc Hill. The Tucson Botanical Gardens and Tohono Chul offer beautiful gardens if you’re not into hiking. The 4th Avenue Street Fair and Tucson Meet Yourself always have great food and music. Biking and walking on The Loop is a great way to see Tucson and stay fit. Reid Park also has fantastic trails and a zoo to help entertain kids.

There are so many great places to eat – Agustin’s Kitchen, Seis, Reforma, Guillermo’s Double L, Blue Willow, Prep & Pastry, El Corral, Culinary Dropout, Rollies Mexican Patio, and more – that it’s tough to get around to all of them!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Teresa Berg, Bev Hollis, Barb Breitsameter. Without the training and support from those 3 we would not be having a conversation.
