We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Busch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steve, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I feel that risk taking is an important part of growth and progress. Even if it is a calculated risk or low risk, I have never been able to move forward in life without some kind of risk. In 2016 when I decided to leave the corporate world and become a digital nomad, it was one of the largest risks I have ever taken. I had to learn a new way of working, a new way of living, it was very large risk.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started shooting photos about 5 years ago, as a way to document and share my travels. I didn’t have much experience with photography before that, so I had to teach myself as much as I could quickly, so I didn’t get frustrated and give up. I was lucky in being a traveler, I was in new and interesting places often, so I was inspired to go out and shoot photos all the time. I realized fairly quick that I had a knack for it, and started making efforts to transition from a hobbyist to a semi-professional photographer.

One of the first lessons I had to learn was how to get over imposter syndrome.

So many professional photographers and creatives have been doing it their entire lives, have had work shown in galleries, or have been published multiple times. I would often think that I am not on their level.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Arizona is pretty lucky in being the Grand Canyon State. No matter what type of person you may have coming to visit, GC will be a fan favorite. There are also so many ghost towns around the state that are super fun to explore and photograph.

Having people visit is great because thats usually when I start getting out and discovering new places to eat and drink.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I decided to become a digital nomad and leave everything behind, I was greatly inspired by Anthony Bourdain and his travels. His writing and on camera style was also a huge influence on me creatively. Most of my friends and family thought I was a little crazy for doing it, and most thought I would change my mind in a week or two, but a few friends really supported me in the decision, and helped out with the transition.
