We had the good fortune of connecting with T R U V O N N E and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi T R U, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
This is something as creatives I feel that we battle with the most often. You have these great highs where you are getting such great feedback from your work and people are noticing your art and what you are saying and finally feeling like an impact is being made, and in that same grasp you have lows where you feel invisible, stuck and like you have gotten absolutely nowhere or you have gone backwards. These are things that constantly and consistently come up… but when I think of the question “how to know whether to keep going or to give up, I would have to ask myself who am I without it? Would you still do this thing whether your audience was thousands or just you and your cat? Is this something that gives you fulfillment regardless of the lack of recognition? or if no one was paying attention? Because the way I see it is yes, you want to make money, become profitable, grow etc, especially on the business side of things, you need that in order to sustain, but in the same breadth what else are we going to do with our time here? whatever gives you purpose and reason, I don’t think you can give up on, I think you can pivot, breaks, I understand all of that but what if you quit right before you get some relief and before things go right for you? You never know.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m really excited about where my artistry is going and how the sound and music changes and grows with you as you evolve. I started to create my music from start to finish, all elements and it’s interesting seeing what you end up creating and making and the risks and detours you go on randomly at 3AM, especially when you run out of money lol but It’s an exciting time, my music I would say is like atmospheric R&B, bedroom pop, indie, just all over the board in textures, tones and influence. With that I would say as the music grows and you really start to study your craft, so do some of those opportunities as well. Sync placements are something that I truly enjoy in regards to seeing what journey the music ends up taking, what TV shows or scenes the music can end up on, it’s an exciting thing. I think challenges come up often, especially when the writer’s strike happened, man that took a toll, but the more you study, and pivot and do work, collaborate, etc things can just come up and happen for you just because that is the intention that you are putting out. My goal with my music is to give people catharsis. A release of tension and emotional strain and just to give a safe place to let all of that go. Just build a community of people that know it’s ok, we are all going through it, we all struggle and I get it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man ok, yes so we would start off probably on a hike on the south mountain preserve and take the scenic route haha Grab breakfast over at Snooze in downtown Gilbert and day drink around there for a bit, hit all of the bars lol Joyride, etc. Then go down to downtown Phoenix and grab a burrito at Crescent Ballroom and see if there are any shows or anything that are playing. Most likely the day after we would relax a bit, maybe go to the botanical gardens. I would want to go to the Phoenix Art Museum and honestly just walk around downtown and enjoy the vibe. If we had time we would spend the last couple of days at a resort in Sedona and take in the energy, the trails and the dining out there. That would be awesome.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out Andre Nelson, he has been my engineer since the beginning really and he is amazing at his craft. He is extremely experimental in regards to being open with ideas and trying new things and I love that, it makes working with him exciting, knowing you’re going to come out with something otherwordly.
