We had the good fortune of connecting with Tasha Schultz of Tchotchkes Design Studio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tasha, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I hail from the northern suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I was raised in an entrepreneurial home and developed a fondness for creative freedom, hard work and the belief + support that I could be anything I wanted when I “grew up”. I spent my summers with a paint brush in my hand, working for my parents painting company.
I knew from a young age I wanted to be my own boss someday, and I had a hunch that I’d end up in some career that involved homes. My mom went back to school when I was a teenager to get her kitchen and bath design certificate, and that sort of sealed the deal for me. I knew I’d be an interior designer.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe a home should reflect the inhabitants, not look like a page out of a catalog. There is an old saying “If you design for everyone, you design for no one”, I try to remind myself that on the daily. I think for the majority of people, it’s so easy to fall into trends. I also believe there is a misconception that “new is nice”, while it can absolutely be, it can also be total garbage. My work blends old and new, and most importantly is attainable. I think we’re living during a challenging time; everything being a click away. There’s a balance we must find between being eco-conscious, intentional, and not falling into consumerism. It’s a tricky! And wonderful time to be living!
My aesthetic is different than most- It’s layered, lived in and approachable. I truly think many people want their homes to have this layered, lived-in look/feel but they don’t know how to achieve it.
It’s important to stay true to yourself and what you love. That’s the main thing that has shaped my business and aesthetic. Knowing what you love is very important.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have fallen hard for Mesa, where we reside. Prior to moving here in 2021, I thought of it as where all the snow birds flocked… now I see it as the best big-little city.
Some of my favorite spots are:
Hiking/biking in Hawes
Eating/drinking/shopping- Espiritu, Taco Chiwas, Organic Bean Cafe, Novel and Inspire farms
I also recently discovered Singh Meadows in Tempe, which is a hidden gem.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends! Having a support system is so important in starting your own company. You need not only people that believe in you, but people that will push and challenge you to work harder and do better. I have all of that and am so blessed.
