Meet Tonia Rainier

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tonia Rainier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tonia, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
The conventional approach frequently relies on a “pill for every ill” strategy, which can perpetuate a cycle of dependency as side effects from one medication lead to the prescription of another. This model often masks symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes, contributing to a steady decline in overall health. From a functional and naturopathic medicine perspective, the solution to chronic illness lies in identifying and addressing root causes. This involves a comprehensive approach that prioritizes lifestyle modifications, targeted supplementation, and personalized care. For example, at Natural Heart Doctor, we see remarkable improvements in patient health by addressing foundational issues such as gut health, toxin elimination, and nutrient deficiencies. By optimizing these areas, lab markers like cholesterol levels often normalize naturally, and patients experience a true restoration of health
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What gets me fired up every day is harnessing the power of natural medicine to transform health—safely, effectively, and often with fewer (or no) medications. I Everyday, I help patients lower their blood pressure naturally, so they can dial down or ditch the pharma entirely. Or finding the hidden culprit behind elevated LDL—like a leaky gut or toxin overload—fixing the issue, and watching cholesterol levels fall back to normal. Even better, seeing a patient with an autoimmune condition find relief from debilitating pain, allowing them to re-engage in life and feel like themselves again. Then there are the “wow” moments, like pinpointing the root cause of arrhythmias and seeing A-fib episodes vanish. Or helping someone with severe, infection-prone eczema that’s been treated with years of antibiotics. Clear the gut, heal the body, and the eczema disappears—for good! These are just some of the stories from my patients that continue to inspire me, proving every day that natural medicine is a game-changer.
In the future, I’m hopeful for a world where everyone wakes up to the toxic soup we’re all swimming in and decides to take action. With advanced lab tests, we can now pinpoint the environmental toxins we’re exposed to and uncover the unique toxic burdens each of us carries. In 5 years, patients investing in toxin lab evaluations will become as routine as an annual checkup, empowering people to use precision natural medicine to detox their bodies and reclaim their health for good. It’s not just wishful thinking—it’s the future of truly thriving.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a weekend getaway, we’d kick things off in style with a helicopter ride that’ll have us take in jaw-dropping landscape views. The many benefits of being married to a Helicopter Pilot. We’d fly over Lake Bartlett, then cruise over Lake Pleasant, where the vibrant blue water is so beautiful. Then, time to hit the ground running—or mountain biking. We’d either hike up Pinnacle Peak for stunning views or grab mountain bikes and take on the Granite Mountain Trail. Pure nature at its finest! After a good workout, we’d wander through the quirky towns of Cave Creek and Carefree, stopping to pick up some authentic turquoise jewelry to remember the trip. When hunger strikes, we’d head to Tonto’s Bar and Grill to devour the best grass-fed, gluten-free burger around. Once we’re fueled up, we’d head to Sedona, rent a Jeep from Barlow Jeep Rentals, and hit the rugged Broken Arrow Trail for some off-roading thrills. To finish off the weekend, we’d have a peaceful picnic at Chicken Point, because no adventure is complete without great friends, great food and jaw-dropping views to share it with!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my incredible family and my rockstar husband, whose unwavering devotion has been the wind beneath my wings. Seriously, I wouldn’t be here without him cheering me on every step of the way! My love affair with root cause medicine began way back in the 2000s when Dr. Mark Hyman dropped his first book—it was like a light bulb went off in my brain (and my heart). That spark turned into a flame during my time shadowing the brilliant Dr. Bryan Glick in Arizona—an absolute powerhouse of a doctor who redefined what great care looks like.
During medical school, Dr. Katie Stage made a lasting impression on me with her incredible knowledge and passion for herbal medicine. Her expertise opened my eyes to the power of natural medicine and its safe role in holistic healing. Fast forward to now, and I’m so grateful to have found my home at Natural Heart Doctor with Dr Jack Wolfson, surrounded by an amazing team that inspires and supports me every single day. It’s been quite the journey, and I’m just getting started!
