Meet Tracy Mayfield | Salon and spa owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tracy Mayfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tracy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started working at the salon I now own in 1995 and I started out shampooing hair and then over the years I did hair then trained others to do hair and won some competitions doing hair and the opportunity came up for me to purchase the salon I worked at and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a part of growing the industry I love and keeping the same great qualities going at my salon and really being able to be a part of all sides of the business. Of course to secure a retirement plan as well.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love my work, I decided it was the career for me in 5th grade and started school for it before I finished high school. My mother wasn’t pleased i choose a “Pink collar job” I knew it could be more than its stereotype . I got settled at my salon in 1995 and started off at the bottom, many times I thought maybe this isn’t my place based on issues with older stylists but I stayed focused and knew i would succeed. With many hours of continuing education and opportunities allowed me because of my performance in the salon I branched out to education, that’s where you get the higher level classes and can start growing others. Elevating the industry by showing and teaching what it can be rather than the stereotype of something you do if you can’t get into college. So with me being seen as a leader and winning some contests and being published in trade magazines with my association with Eufora international I felt confident i could tackle the next level salon ownership with that I could provide a space for creating long lasting relationships wile providing great service and teaching to younger people in the industry how great an industry it is . With my contacts that I had created over the years the risk was worth it to me to buy the business and because of those connections I’ve also been appointed to be on the state board of barbering and cosmetology for Arizona for the next three years and am excited about the change that I will be a part of for the state and not only just my salon
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Tucson has many great places to check out sabino canyon is a great place to walk and see some waterfalls and natural desert landscape after the monsoon rains it can be dramatic with the water but i would say I’m mostly a homebody because my work is so social so a highlight for me is a good dinner at one of our many great local restaurants one that comes to mind is vero amore a lovely small contemporary Italian place that has a hidden speakeasy if your inclined to be more adventurous.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many have helped me on my journey I will just name a few Kathy Alexander and Paul lindsey for trusting in my leadership qualities and helping me through the steep learning curve that is business. Cynthia Fairchild (rip) the first owner of the salon who created and shared her vision and exposed me to all sorts of amazing education, some of the finer things in life like nice restaurants and travel Eufora international a product company that also is big into education and growing people in the beauty industry helped me immensely to find my voice / trust myself/ get out of my head and how to be an educator and realize that owning was the next step to continue my career. They are the ones who introduced Vishen lakhiani to me at one of Eufora’s global events the head of Mindvally and the author of the code of the extraordinary mind which really helped change the way my life would continue. Including divorce for the betterment of both parties lives.
