We had the good fortune of connecting with Tuby Akinlosotu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tuby, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
I believe that anyone can have a great idea and decide to start a business, but it is not for the faint at heart. Being a business owner comes with a lot of ups and downs that are not all planned for. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic was utterly unexpected and caused many in the event industry to completely shutdown. Right away, I began to think creatively and pivot my ideas. I created a micro-wedding package; we downsized from two locations to an offsite commercial warehouse facility and set up a showroom in one of the warehouse units. We did whatever it took to stay afloat. Our marketing strategy quickly changed and we understood what needed to be done for the given time. So, in summary…in business, you have to have a plan, another plan, and a backup plan. You have to be resilient and willing to do what it takes when the storms come.

We are creatives and artists who design weddings and events of all kinds. Our luxury company Finer Detailz is unique as we were the first event company to bring certain luxury rental items to Arizona. We are visionaries, so we follow trends.  We saw that Arizona needed more than rustic options, so we took that step of faith and invested heavily into the quality luxury rental and decor items that make any event stand out. It wasn’t always easy getting to this point. I persevered and received my Bachelor’s degree in business and communications as a single mother of two young children. I later received my Master’s in Education and now currently working on my Doctorate in Organizational Leadership.  I started a catering business called SophistiKatered at the age of 21. I worked two jobs, went to school, and did my business on the side for many, many years before I met my husband. My husband came in and took a load off by stepping right in to do the hard labor that I honestly don’t know how I did on my own. Since we were already in the event industry with catering, we had inventory like linens, chairs, catering equipment, etc., so we decided to launch a separate rental company. We opened You Can’t Beat This Party Rentals & Event Decor in 2014. We worked hard and received awards for marketing and customer service. We opened a second location in Oldtown Scottsdale in 2017 and then moved to a bigger warehouse in Avondale that same year. We launched our luxury company Finer Detailz Luxury Events in 2018 and opened a North Scottsdale location in 2019. Our biggest challenge has been keeping consistent and reliable employees. Sometimes if we didn’t have enough staff, we would work round the clock just to make sure we delivered flawless events. I have learned how to balance it all and that being a business owner is rewarding but also very challenging. People sometimes think you work less, but you actually work more. You may not always have the passion but you have to be passionate about your business. You have to be disciplined and be a critical thinker. You have to pivot when needed and do your diligent research. It is one thing to have a great idea and create a brand, but you have to market and protect your brand. When you see us at an event, you will never see the owners folding our arms, we get right down and do what needs to be done. You have to be willing to do the work and do whatever it takes to make your brand successful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to grab a nice cup of coffee and a nice pastry. I love The Henry! I also love to browse The Biltmore area and North Scottsdale shops. I love doing a staycation at resorts like The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale, Royal Palms, The Westin, and Carefree Resort.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I need to first shoutout to Jehovah for the strength and grace to keep going. Next, a definite shout out to my husband Opeyemi Michael Akinlosotu. We are a small family business and he is behind most of the loading up, deliveries, and hard labor. Together we make a great team. I am the admin/ creative/visionary and he gets the job done despite all odds!
