We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I grew up in the outdoors and always felt that if I could find a way to expose more people to the beauty of nature, more people would be willing to take steps to protect our wildlands. I was always interested in photography and cameras. It was the next logical step to combine the two things I loved.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Certainly, most proud of the fact I’m self taught, I knew nothing of photography before picking up a camera. The hard work and hours of practice instilled not just a sense of pride but a continued self-reliance and determination when faced with adversity. I’ve had to learn to slow down and take everything in, not just when out shooting but with everything in life. You can’t race to finish a hike or expedition, you’ll bypass every beautiful shot and moment, just like racing through life will cause you to miss some of the best and most meaningful experiences. I just want to show people how awesome wild spaces are, from the smallest animals to the largest, and most breathtaking landscapes. I want people to take pride in our wild spaces and help create more stewards of our public land.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First stop would be the Salt River, spending a day swimming, fishing, and exploring the surrounding area looking for the best views/wildlife. Next, would definitely be a few nights out in the Four Peaks Wilderness, to get a better understanding of the unassuming desert and gain perspective of how beautiful the Sonoran actually is. Take some time to sit around a campfire, truly appreciating how dense the stars really are without all the light pollution, and the true silence that only wild spaces can offer. Coming back into Phoenix proper, The Wandering Tortoise Tap Room to enjoy some local beer and wines. Take a trip out to the Botanical Gardens, and the Heard Museum to gain some insight and the perspective of the Native People who inhabited the area in years passed.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Uncle Bill. The first photographer I met. He is always involved with what I’m into and has always offered advice when it was needed.
