We had the good fortune of connecting with ZorDonofDoom (ZorDon or Zor) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ZorDonofDoom, why did you pursue a creative career?
I spent most of my childhood and young adult life catering to the wants and aspirations others had for me (particularly in the medical field), but I was never truly happy. If anything, it stressed me out to the point that I had massive anxiety and long periods of depression that I couldn’t understand. Once I had finally allowed myself to try and do something I was passionate about, my life felt much lighter. I could wake up each day not dreading just existing or stressing out about what I felt like I was “supposed to do”. If there’s one thing nursing taught me though, it’s that I’m definitely not cut out for it. I have nothing but the utmost respect for nurses! It is NOT an easy job.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music saved me growing up and I always wanted to be able to do the same for other people. I feel like music can transcend all sorts of barriers as a way to connect the world around us no matter where we live. As a songwriter, I write about what I’ve lived, learned, and seen; and I hope that even just one person can relate to or feel seen by my music. There was a period of time when I hated my voice because of my low self-confidence. I was afraid of failure. It got to a point where even one mess-up would make me burst into tears and run away! Thankfully, however, singing with a band and interacting with other musicians helped me find my voice again. I will never stop being thankful to my nursing friends for helping me realize my passion.
I found InRage Entertainment (my label) through an audition app. When they emailed to meet up the next day, I immediately bought a ticket to LA and flew down! The rest was history! What I love best about them is that they always put their artists first. What they do and what we produce together always helps slap the imposter syndrome right out of me.
I feel like I’ve always been a struggling content creator. Getting to where I am today was not easy, and a lot of what held me back was just me getting in my own way. I found Twitch streaming after feeling absolutely burnt out with video editing on YouTube and for my music videos. Just being able to turn on a camera, go live, and show who I am without fear was so daunting at first. I used to have so many hang-ups! I had a list of things I shouldn’t do because I thought that I had to control who I was. I was scared of being judged and I felt like I had to be perfect, which is why it took months for me to post anything. Streaming literally taught me it was okay to make mistakes, and sometimes I still feel like my community helps me as a person more than they help me!
I’m excited about my next EP! It will hopefully release at the end of this year or the beginning of next year! There are a few songs I still need to record, but if all goes well it should definitely be out by next year!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve always defaulted to what my best friend wants to see most and then base our itinerary on that! Personally, I usually just like to provide places to eat. I’m a bit of a foodie! Vietnamese food, Korean BBQ, Greek, Italian, Filipino, Chinese, vegan–I’d be sure we try all sorts of different kinds of food.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom has always been supportive even if we don’t always see eye to eye. I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing today without her. I’m extremely blessed to have her in my life. aZ4everyoccasion (Z Peoples) has helped be the voice of reason against the voice inside my head during many dark moments the past 6 years. The support he’s given me has been astronomical in my growth as an artist.
InRage Entertainment was the family that helped breathe my songs to life. They helped show me how cool I could actually be if I just was that – me.
My Twitch community helped pull me out of a huge rut that I had been sitting in for almost 5 years. I never thought I would be able to make the connections and friends that I have today if not for them!
