We had the good fortune of connecting with SYLVIE and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi SYLVIE, what are you inspired by?
To ask an artist what they’re inspired by is like asking Shakespeare what his favorite thing about poetry is– Where do you even start?
Inspiration for a song might come from something more specific: a heartbreak, a revelation, a change in pace of life. Inspiration as a whole…well it has to come from everything. I’m inspired by everything. I’m inspired by the way we as humans think and act, inspired by the way we get angry at someone that we love too much, inspired by the way we, whether we know it or not, are all creators. We’re created to create. We can think of something in our mind and bring it into reality. Architecture, medicine, fashion, businesses, it all started as an idea that no one could see but us. It just so happens that my niche of creation is music.
When you’re a little kid, you lie to your mom about sneaking cookies from the cupboard and to your teacher about not turning in your homework because your brother ate it. (Or dog. Same difference.) The unfortunate truth about getting older is that we lie to ourselves… more than we’d like to admit. I think when we experience art, there’s a little something inside us that breaks down, even if it’s subconsciously. When people listen to music, it’s feeling the truth rather than just hearing it that frees us from the wall of lies we’ve been telling ourselves. We can’t argue with it. And we don’t want to argue with it. That’s why I write. I want people to listen to something that makes them feel okay with admitting their messy truth, at least to themselves.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been working on my debut album “CONSCIOUSNESS” for the past 3 years, and it’s finally coming out of it’s shell. I came up with the concept of “CONSCIOUSNESS” when I realized the only mind we will ever come closest to truly understanding is our own, and even then, there are still hidden areas we will never understand. One of the earliest ideas I wanted to explore was the concept of memory, and how the more you try to remember something and the harder you try to hold onto it, the more it shape-shifts into something that doesn’t even fit what the memory was to begin with. It instead turns in to the memory you WANT to remember. It becomes your story instead of the true story. That’s where “lie to keep the memory alive” came from. I had so much echoing in my head during this time, so many shape-shifting memories, so many voices I wanted to turn off, but then to counteract it, so many silences I wanted to fill. That’s when I wrote “i don’t listen” and soon after, “i’m afraid of the dark!”, two of the singles off the album that were released earlier this year. I think in a weird way, I was obsessed with the fact that I was never satisfied with the noise – or the silence – in my head. I couldn’t tell how much control I had over it or how much control it had over me, and writing this album felt like trying to balance the toxicity of emotions with the wonder of them. Our consciousness allows us to feel every bit of the high highs of life and low lows, I personally think the blessing outweighs the curse, but that’s a debate everyone must decipher on their own. Listen to “CONSCIOUSNESS” out April 8th on all platforms.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Papago Park is one of my favorite spots to go sit, think, journal, and walk around. I’m a big believer in taking time for yourself to clear your head. It’s amazing what you realize about yourself or about the world when all the background noise gets taken out, and sometimes, all you need are some red rocks, a lake, and some ducklings to be able to take everything in.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
One thing about being a musician is that you meet so many other artists, sound engineers, and producers along the way. Some of the people I’ve met through have become my closest friends. I met Nicholas Edgett, now a mixing engineer in Nashville, a little over a year ago here in Arizona. I remember being in the middle of a studio session recording “social butterflies” for my album, “CONSCIOUSNESS,” when he popped in to listen. He turned to me and said “You wrote this and made the track too?” I nodded, and he ended up sitting in on the rest of the session. When we were finished recording that one, he asked if he could try mixing the vocals and I told him to go for it. Nick came back in about 3 hours with a rough mix. He finished playing it for us and I turned to him and said, “You made me sound like a POP STAR.” Just like that, he became my number one partner for making music. Something that no one tells you when you go into the music industry is that when you find someone that shares your vision, stick with them. It’s a rare and special thing to find someone that can hear something the way you hear it, and understand the heart behind it before it’s even created. Not only does Nick become a mind-reader when I share my music with him, but he also takes it to the next level, and I am very blessed to be able to work with him.
