Meet Alisa Seleznova | Professional ballroom dancer, choreographer & instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alisa Seleznova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alisa, why did you pursue a creative career?
I started my artistic career in dance at the young age of 7. As early as 10 years old, I already had a clear vision of becoming a professional dancer and dance teacher. The allure of the dancer’s lifestyle and the aesthetic appeal of the dance studio fascinated me. The wooden floors, the mirrors, the elegant attires, the dance shoes, and the music that creates an inspiring atmosphere that drew me in.
Ballroom dancing, in particular, impressed me with its complex details and rituals. It is a world full of unique charm and hidden experiences that can only be truly understood through the art of dance. Being a ballroom dancer requires a harmonious blend of athleticism and grace, where one must warm up, stretch, and engage in various prep routines before stepping onto the dance floor.
Choosing a creative career was a natural progression for me. Over the course of 21 years, I fell deeply in love with dancing, and that passion has never waned. While I have diverse interests, dance has become an integral part of my being. It is a profound expression of who I am, and I cannot envision my life without it. Teaching others to dance and guiding them into the world of ballroom dance brings me immense joy. Sharing my knowledge and continuously learning more about the art form is a fulfilling journey that fuels my love for dance every day.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a ballroom dancer and instructor, I believe what sets me apart on the competitive dance floor is my unique personality I bring to my performances. I strive to deliver the energy and connect with both the audience and the judges. As an instructor, I am very patient and caring towards my students. Witnessing their growth and seeing the joy they experience while dancing brings me immense fulfillment.
One aspect of my journey that I am particularly proud of is the incredible individuals I have had the privilege of meeting. From the talented coaches who have helped shape my dancing to the amazing students I have had the opportunity to work with, I am continuously inspired by the people who surround me. Ballroom dancing has a way of attracting diverse individuals from various walks of life, and I am excited to continue spreading the love of dance to even more people.
Like any profession, there have been challenges along the way. As a professional dancer and instructor, managing a busy schedule of teaching, practicing, and traveling to competitions can be demanding. However, through meticulous planning and organization, my partner and I have overcome these challenges. We plan our schedule and calendar at least six months in advance, ensuring that we can balance our commitments effectively and allow for essential periods of rest to maintain productivity.
Throughout my career, I have learned important lessons that have shaped me both as a dancer and as an individual. One of the most significant lessons is to embrace my passion and talent for the beauty of movement. Dancing has taught me to appreciate the profound impact it can have on one’s life, not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a means to transform stressful moments into moments of joy and self-discovery.
In sharing my story and brand, my ultimate message is that ballroom dancing is a remarkably diverse art form that has the power to captivate and inspire everyone. Whether you are an experienced dancer or just starting your journey, there is something for everyone within the world of ballroom dance. I am dedicated to sharing the transformative power of dance with as many people as possible, helping them discover their own unique connection to the beauty and joy it brings.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d like to describe, how I would spend a day with the group of friends.
Our journey would begin with a breakfast at Essence Bakery, setting the perfect tone for the day. Next, we’d head to McCormick Ranch to rent bicycles from Rides N Motion, enjoying a ride through the scenic surroundings.
Afterward, we’d have a coffee break at Cafio in Downtown Phoenix. Then, we’d immerse ourselves in the beauty of the Japanese Garden.
In the evening, we’d dine at the Across the Pond, it’s a modern Japanese cuisine. To conclude our exciting day, we’d head to the Arizona Latino Arts Center for a Flamenco show, to watch some rhythmic and passionate performance.
Throughout the week, we’d also have the option to participate in thrilling activities. We might try out the best boxing classes at Camelback Boxing Ranch, an exhilarating way to get the adrenaline pumping. Additionally, we’d explore our artistic sides with pottery classes at Sunshine Sunflower Studio, an engaging and creative activity perfect for bonding with friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the incredible coaches, mentors, and supporters who have played a significant role in shaping my journey as a ballroom dancer. Their guidance and expertise have been crucial in my growth and success.
First and foremost, I would like to express my deep gratitude to my former coach, Oleg Kochniev, a renowned and highly respected coach from Ukraine. Under his guidance, my dance partner, Ivan Khudoliy, and I experienced tremendous growth and development. Additionally, I want to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of top coaches of this industry and champions such as Dekatra Lapaeva, Barbara McColl, Ruud Vermeij, and Slavik Kryklyvyy, who provided additional insights and inspiration during our early years.
Upon moving to the US, our journey continued with the support of exceptional coaches such as Maria Nikolishina, Diana McDonald, Carmen Vincelj, Nikolay Voronovich, and Eugene Katsevman. Their expertise, dedication, and mentorship have been instrumental in my continuous growth as a dancer and our dance couple.
Furthermore, I would like to give a special shoutout to Freed of London, our trusted shoe sponsor. Their commitment to crafting the best and most comfortable dance shoes has been invaluable to my performance on the dance floor.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, including family, friends, our beloved students, and the dance community as a whole. Your encouragement and belief in my abilities have been a driving force behind my success.
