We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Chavez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are the in-the-moment, evaluation of how much you actually trust yourself. Whether you’re going in with experience or the eagerness to learn diligently along the way, how will you respond? Do you take the opportunity in front of you and be open to change, failure, success, and blatantly the unknown or play it safe? My business was born on a impulsive decision, a risk. I was working a community event for my previous job and I was in charge of face painting. A mother had asked me if I had my business and if i do kids parties. I didn’t have a business of my own at that exact moment but I said yes. I gave her my phone number and later that night i made an Instagram and gmail, came up with the name on the drive home. Almost 6 months later, I have the greatest opportunities and honest honor to be part of the small business community. I had traveled and experienced so many new environments and people. The small business community is so abundant in kind hearted- soulful people. If i did not take that risk, i would not have made the connections i have made. I learn the plethora of tips and tricks to be the most efficient and productive set up as a small business for all different attended events. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to network and socialize for not only my growth but shared network of others, Jim Rohn once said, “If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Face painting might be temporary art that washes off at the end of the day but the memory of it last a lifetime. I had a little girl who wanted a face paint but she didn’t want to do it alone. She turned to mom and dad and they didn’t care for one then she turned to tata, and he said of course. He got in my chair and i painted a cute Bad Bunny heart and she got a butterfly. I want art to bring smiles to all ages and faces. You just have to embrace the paint. Embarking on your own business is never without complications. You are writing and rewriting your plan of action every single day. I had an experience with a doing 2 markets in a day during the hot phoenix summer. It was well over 100 degrees all day and night. I did everything i could to stay hydrated and going. I was not listening to my body when i was starting to show signs of heat exhaustion. I have lived in Arizona my whole life but have never experienced such a toll on my body in the heat. I pushed through both markets but in my opinion was not fully worth it. I wouldn’t put my team members in that position to stay, why would i push myself beyond limits. I have learned to listen to the conditions and read the room. Its not always worth chasing the bag. You reputation will speak for itself if you know how to prioritize it. I want the world to know that small business owners are built with a different kind of grit. We will do whatever it takes to grow. It is taking that risk, reaching out to resources, and stepping out of your own personal comfort zone to grow. Face painting has shown me that you can make your own magic in your own unique way. It will bring someone joy just as much as making it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would make sure its during the fall in Arizona. During the day would be easy, sit down to eat brunch at Waffleato in Goodyear. and order the best breakfast of delicious unique dressing of waffles with a mimosa flight. Then i would get a aguas frescas to go nd head over to Brass Armadillo Antique Mall. You can spend literally hours just strolling and looking at all the fun antiques and unique pieces set up. Later towards the night, I would definitely hit up First Friday downtown. I would make a quick stop at Fair Trade Cafe for a coffee for the walk. The food vendors, the local artists and entertainers are to die for.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All of the staff at Mujeres Mercado. I just want to thank them will all the love in my heart, they really help me reach a whole ne market and elevate my setup. I got more signage and lots of feedback to grow
