Meet Brook Choulet, M.D. | The Performance Psychiatrist®, Founder & CEO, Choulet Performance Psychiatry®

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brook Choulet, M.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brook, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business came from a pattern I observed repeatedly throughout my training and early career.
I grew up in a family of psychiatrists and saw firsthand how transformative mental health care can be. As I progressed through medical training and into practice, I became increasingly aware that many of the people operating in high-stakes environments, athletes, executives, entrepreneurs, and other high-achieving individuals, often struggled to find mental health care that truly reflected the realities of their lives.
One of the most consistent observations I made was that the people carrying significant responsibility and performing under constant pressure were often the very people the mental health system was least designed to serve. They needed clinical expertise, certainly, but they also needed discretion, accessibility, personalization, and a physician who understood the unique demands they faced.
I found myself asking a simple question: what would mental health care look like if it were intentionally designed for these individuals?
That question eventually became Choulet Performance Psychiatry®.
Building my own practice was driven by a clear conviction about what mental health care could and should look like for high-performing individuals. I wanted to create a model that combined exceptional psychiatric care with a highly personalized concierge experience. I was never interested in building the largest practice. I was interested in building the right model: one where patients could receive thoughtful, evidence-based care that supports both their wellbeing and their ability to thrive.
What has been most rewarding is seeing that need validated every day. Whether I am working with an athlete, executive, entrepreneur, or young person navigating significant expectations, I have the privilege of helping people develop the clarity, resilience, and self-awareness necessary to sustain success over time.
Looking back, I never set out simply to start a business. I set out to create the kind of mental health care I believed was missing. Everything that has followed has been an extension of that original mission.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a board-certified psychiatrist and the founder of Choulet Performance Psychiatry®, a concierge psychiatry practice focused on the mental health and performance needs of athletes, executives, entrepreneurs, and other high-performing individuals.
My path into this work began long before medical school. I grew up in a family of psychiatrists and saw firsthand how transformative mental health care can be. As my training progressed, I became increasingly interested in the intersection of mental health, performance, leadership, and human potential. I also noticed a gap. Many of the people operating in the highest-stakes environments were navigating extraordinary pressure, yet the mental health system was not always designed with their needs in mind.
That observation ultimately led me to build Choulet Performance Psychiatry® and dedicate my career to helping individuals perform at a high level without sacrificing their wellbeing.
What sets my work apart is the belief that mental health and high performance are not separate conversations. For too long, mental health has often been viewed primarily through the lens of crisis or illness. While that care is critically important, I believe mental health is also a foundational component of leadership, decision-making, resilience, and long-term success. My work is centered on helping people strengthen that foundation.
Professionally, I am most proud of helping advance the conversation around mental health in high-performance environments. Whether through clinical care, leadership roles, writing, speaking, or work with professional and collegiate athletes, I have had the opportunity to contribute to a broader shift in how mental health is understood and discussed.
The journey certainly has not always been easy. Building a practice, developing a niche specialty, and helping establish a relatively new field requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that meaningful progress often comes from staying committed to a clear mission, even when the path forward is not fully defined.
What I want people to know about my work and my brand is simple: mental wellbeing and sustained performance are not in conflict. In fact, they depend on one another. The most successful individuals and organizations understand that investing in mental health is not a sign of weakness. It is a strategic advantage and an essential part of long-term success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a close friend were visiting for a week, I would want them to experience the things that make Arizona feel like home to me.
We would definitely spend time in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, starting with some of my favorite local restaurants and plenty of time outdoors. Arizona has a unique way of combining beautiful weather, mountain views, great golf, and an active lifestyle, all within a short drive.
Depending on the time of year, I would also take them up to Flagstaff. My family spends a lot of time there during the summer, and it offers a completely different side of Arizona. The cooler weather, pine trees, golf courses, and slower pace make it one of my favorite places to spend time with family and friends.
Of course, I would also make sure they experienced some of Arizona’s sports culture. Having worked with athletes and sports organizations throughout my career, I appreciate how much professional and collegiate sports contribute to the energy of our community.
What I enjoy most about Arizona is the variety. In a single week, you can enjoy incredible dining, spend time outdoors, play a round of golf, attend a sporting event, and still find opportunities to slow down and connect with the people around you. That’s what makes it such a special place to live.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would dedicate my shoutout to the psychiatrists who came before me, both within my own family and throughout my training.
I grew up in a family of psychiatrists, so I had a unique opportunity to see the impact of mental health care long before I chose this profession myself. I witnessed how clarity, resilience, and emotional wellbeing could change the trajectory of a person’s life, and that perspective shaped the way I think about medicine to this day.
I have also been fortunate to learn from exceptional mentors throughout my education and career. They challenged me to think critically, pursue excellence, and remain curious about how psychiatry can continue to evolve to meet the needs of the people we serve.
Much of what I’ve built professionally is rooted in lessons that were passed down to me by physicians who were deeply committed to their patients, their profession, and the responsibility that comes with caring for others. I’m grateful for the example they set and for the foundation they provided.
Their example taught me that great psychiatric care is never just about treating symptoms. It’s about helping people build lives that are healthier, stronger, and more sustainable.
