We had the good fortune of connecting with Henry and Lindsay Saldana and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Henry and Lindsay, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
At Saldana Physical Therapy & Wellness, we are on a journey to connect and create a trusted network of professionals to enhance the healthcare collaboration with our patients. We decided to not take insurance and treat by a cash based model. We have set prices for our evaluations and subsequent therapy visits. Our aim is provide high quality and evidence based treatment, as well as create effective home exercise programs with videos that promote life long management of our client’s physical condition or wellness goals.

As professionals, there have been numerous barriers that plague the healthcare workforce and limit the high quality care that physical therapists can provide. Issues range from Insurance authorization, in-network authorization hurdles, denial of claims, reduced reimbursement for healthcare providers, etc. In fact, I have heard many medical doctors leaving or even firing their insurance providers due to low reimbursement or denial of claims.

In Arizona, Physical Therapists work under direct access which means anybody can have access to physical therapy without the need for a physician referral or prescription. However, for federally funded insurances to cover physical therapy evaluation and treatment services, you will require a current physician referral.

Saldana Physical Therapy and Wellness PLLC wishes to improve collaboration with all healthcare professionals, enhance the efficacy of treatment sessions, as well as propel our profession forward into the coming decades. Physical Therapists are highly skilled clinicians in many aspects, but at times are not allowed to provide the full spectrum of services available due to insurance limitations. We know our clients deserve better, and so does the future of our profession.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We met in school while attending the Midwestern University Doctor of Physical Therapy program. We were not looking for a romantic partnership, but that’s what we ended up with! In the beginning, we formed a great working dynamic and friendship as we studied for tests, skills checks, and finally the board exam. We each have differing strengths and weaknesses which proved helpful as our partnership grew and continues to do so now in our marriage. Following graduation, we’ve since become more educated and skilled in various realms within the outpatient physical therapy world by continued education and by adapting a life-long learning mentality.

Working for large corporate physical therapy companies for several years was a great jump start to our personal clinical expertise, however, as time went on we realized that all the training we had was not being utilized to its fullest potential. Clients were getting less than optimal treatment as our schedules became more and more full. We were expected to produce the same outcome with less and less time with each client. This was not what we signed up for.

This sparked the journey of starting our own physical therapy practice. It’s definitely a leap of faith going outside of the insurance reimbursement safety net because many do not know any other way. We want the world to know that there IS a better way to recover from pain, injury, and decreased function! For those who are truly willing to put in the work, dedicate some time and energy into themselves, the results are phenomenal! We aren’t just getting someone out of pain, but we are training them to be more adept to recover, prevent and prepare for the future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We honestly live a quite and simple life. Even though we are close to so many wonderful places to eat and spend time, we love taking our son to our local park. We have a great community full of young families and have built many wonderful friendships. We’ve even spent some time hosting free “workouts at the park” for our neighbors! Kids were welcome to play on the playground equipment or join in on the fun!

We also love spending time at the Gym in which we are affiliates with: Crossfit Tempe. This gym has an inspiring and welcoming group of coaches, and also its members. If any friend of ours was coming to visit we would probably get pizza and head to the park, and then head to the gym for a workout. Afterwards we’d socialize with the gym members/coaches and maybe host a BBQ and take the kids swimming.

Some of our favorite places to eat are Green Corner for Mediterranean, Barros for Pizza and Freddies for burgers and fries.
We also like to check out Tempe Marketplace as well as the local theaters such as Pollock Theaters and Harkins. Another great spot next to Tempe Marketplace is Spinatos pizza with an excellent selection and scrumptious pizza!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d like to dedicate our shoutout to our son. His presence in this world gives us an amazing amount of drive and passion to create a better life for him and for others of the future. We hope to be parents that he can be proud of and inspired by.
