We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick Beck and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rick, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The amount of hard work, time, energy and dedication it takes to list market and successfully sell a home or estate! Plus the knowledge and professional execution it takes to coordinate selling one home while simultaneously finding a new home, negotiating and getting that offer accepted and closing both deals in a fixed period of time. “It’s an art and a science!”

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A friend some years back paid me a huge complement. She was the president of the BGLAAR (Beverly Hills Greater Los Angeles Association of Realtors) at the time. She told me that she wanted me to teach a class on remodeling your business model for an ever changing market. She said, “you have reinvented yourself more than anyone I know.” That was a huge complement because I really respect her and what she had accomplished in her career.

In everyone’s life and career there will be challenges and change. I have always believed the person that is the most chameleon like (the ability to change directions, business models, thickness of your skin for challenges ahead, etc.) is the person who will continue to succeed in all environments. No matter the market conditions changing because of economic conditions, technological advances, personal challenges, etc. your always able to change and move forward in a successful progression.

Rick Beck Luxury Properties / Rick Beck Real Estate started at the bottom like everyone else. It changed many times over an almost 4 decade evolution from first time home buyers and sellers to new housing projects to REO / foreclosures to hi-end luxury lifestyle properties.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First of all, there are so many fun things to do throughout Phoenix Metro and the weather is perfect. I’ll give you a list in no particular order because I would want to do them all in one day! After my best friend arrives we would wake up the first morning and every morning during his stay to coffee in my spa to relax, loosen our bodies and soak up the sun. After that, shower and off to any one of a bevy of great events: Barrett Jackson or Mecum car auctions, Top Golf for some drinks and/or food while we hit the range and it’s right next to Talking Stick Casino for a couple hours of Blackjack (hopefully we win) to play and meet people from all over in town for the same purpose. Next up maybe tickets to the 16th hole at the Phoenix Open, business networking, partying and fun, fun, fun! Finally Spring training Baseball games 1 or 2 per day for the rest of his stay and maybe throw in a visit to the Rock-n Roll Museum, hike camelback Mountain to take in the views and maybe every other night we rotate between BBQ’ing at home to catch our breathe from all the activities and on the in between nights visit one of so many speakeasy bars that are hidden in obscure locations. Then onto dinner at Andreoli Italian Grocer (simple), Steak 44, Cava (for the eye candy), Sanctuary, Lon’s Hermosa for outdoor dining in a western setting (maybe some cowboys show up to play campfire music) and a favorite local surf & turf at Tarbell’s. Of course we can always throw golfing and clubing in the mix somewhere and we would also probably fit in time for some target practice at Scottsdale Gun Club where I’m a member and finally make it up to Cave Creek for a rodeo. Whew! I’m tired.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Initially, I would have to give credit for getting my real estate license to my ex-wife because she decided to get her real estate agent license and then my job was phased out so I followed within 2 months and we formed a team. We struggled our first 1 1/2 years putting deals together and then strange circumstances kept intervening in our success. For example: A doctor we represented getting fired from a well known hospital while we were in escrow on a sale and new purchase.. Finally, from the end of May through the beginning of July in 1988 we went on a streak where everything we touched turned to SOLD! Literally we sold 1 property per day for 34 days. Wow!

Then most of all to my wife, Nikki, the love of my life of 28 years (32 years together) has been resiliently behind me through thick and thin no matter what the market conditions presented. She has be a rock of support every time things changed and I have had to remodel my business. She has always known I will succeed once I put my mind to something.

My favorite mantra: “In a pressure situation a loser looks back on past failures, a winner looks back on past successes!” I believe a famous coach had that on his desk (unknown) and I love it!
