Meet Marissa Chong | Owner & Founder of Permanent Change Coaching

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marissa Chong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marissa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was an in-person trainer that was frustrated by the fact that ALL the time in our session was taken up by talking about the exercises we were doing, and catching up on life but managing nutrition and the other 23 hours of the day was HARD to do in that one-hour session!
So I created an all-in-one solution for the clients I was working with in-person and gave it to them for free. I saw how much of a difference it made in their actual results and changes that they wanted, so I decided to expand to solely online within the next year.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What I am most proud of with my business is the fact that we do so much more than ‘get women in shape’ … SO many other companies do that, and promise the world but lack the follow-through.
What we do at Permanent Change Coaching is we dive deeper into the client’s life, and figure out why things went wrong in the first place to prevent it from happening again. This ‘root cause’ approach allows our clients results to be life-long and lasting because it’s not a band-aid solution on a decades-long problem (our health habits typically stem from childhood and early adulthood, what we learned, and didn’t learn).
Our clients joke that we are like their therapists, and we are not – that line in the sand is clearly drawn for scope of practice… but the reason it feels this way is because our health and fitness results stem from our IDENTITY. How we see ourselves and who we believe we are. If you believe that you are someone who works out regularly and prioritizes their health, then you will act as if you are that person. If you believe that you are lazy and complacent, you will act as if you are that person.
What we do is we help empower women to shift their self-image and concept, to shift their identity and create permanent change.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Fashion square!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say the biggest shoutout goes to my father.
He is someone who instilled in me from a young age a few things that made me a go-getter and a do-er…
“Can’t” is not a part of my vocabulary. The rephrase is – I AM capable, but I choose not to do things.
There is no “try” in my vocabulary. Only choosing to DO or NOT do.
The way he ‘coached’ me through life as a kid was teaching me that life is all about choices, and that I am in the driver’s seat. This allowed me to have such an empowered mindset going into adulthood and I created my own reality, career, and path on my own.
