Meet Noah Laidlaw | Bassist & venue manager

We had the good fortune of connecting with Noah Laidlaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Noah, what do you want your legacy to be?
This particular question is something I think about frequently. Personally what I’d love is to be remembered for being someone that helped others , and someone who treated others with kindness and gave absolutely everyone a chance , a little selfishly I also hope that when the time comes I’ve at-least inspired a few to play bass or possibly push themselves to be the best they possibly can !

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So this is a two parter one being that I’m a bassist in quite a few bands and that I’m also a manager of a local rehearsal studio and venue
My bassist story : as a kid I was always drawn to the feeling and vibration of music and I always found that’s where I connected with the music I was listening to , from there I started getting into bands like slipknot , mudvayne and black sabbath . As for what sets me apart from people I wouldn’t really be able to on point that however I find myself mixing in a nu metal vibe to any band that I play with as I found that’s where my groove really is . I also didn’t find this easy at all and for years was struggling to find my own sound , I think what really helped me was stepping away for years to really devolve my playing , learning the works of victor wooten , Nick Shinz (Job for a cowboy and someone who I studied under) and Ryan Martini (mudvayne) . From there I think I’ve finally found my sound and learned that with time and practice you can achieve what you want to !
Venue / rehearsal studio manager: with this part of my career I honestly feel like I got insanely lucky . My boss Mike saw my vision and it was similar to his own , we have been going at it since November , learning many valuable lessons along the way , meeting all types of musicians and people around the music world , learning what to do and what not to do , listening to customers and bands about what we could do to improve and grow ! I feel like I still have ALLOT to achieve and grow from here and I cannot wait for what the future holds for The Spot!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So if I was speaking Newmarket I’d definitely take somone to a show at the venue I work at , from there probably show them my favourite walking trails like the Tim Taylor trail , walk down Main Street , visit places like the George for some craft beer . I’m a pretty simple person so honestly I either live at work or in my spare time make music !

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are absolutely so many people that I’d love to give a shoutout to , however I’ll give you 5 people, one business and my mother that have truly made me so thankful for who I am and where I am today
– Kris Chayer is one of my biggest inspirations and has been one of my best mentors in the metal scene , allot of you may know him from beyond deviation or DRAGONCORPSE and for me the fact he created two genre defining sounds is absolutely mind blowing considering the differences between the two ! He’s also been one of the best band mates I could ask for and I’m honoured that he asked me to be apart of both projects !
– Mike Capobianco ( AKA boss man or capo) , he approached me with not only a job opportunity but a dream job in helping him run The Spot Newmarket witch is a local rehearsal studio and music venue , he’s shown me that not only are there still kind hearted people in this world but that you can also have a boss that inspires you to be creative and listens to ideas that you have . He’s also an all around unit on the drums being in bands such as the Hysterics , BS101 and green light district !
– Jacob Cooledge has helped me really get back into the local scene after years of being away from it , he’s one of the most down to earth and real people that I’ve come across , always willing to help or support any of his friends , I also couldn’t be more proud of his band Beguiler for always pushing the limit of what they can do and showing people that they have something to prove , hell they are going to Alberta this month for finals in Canada’s leg of the Waken Metal battle of the bands !
– Alex Sevigny one of my best friends in this planet , and probably my favourite metal producer. He’s my band mate in Planetkiller and has done production in multiple of my other bands , he always continues to push out unique mixes all while making any experience as easy as possible ! From that he’s probably one of the kindest and supportive individuals you can meet while always helping you to push yourself to be the best musician you can . He’s a staple of underground metal , and also apart of other bands like Divine Destruction and Litterbox Massacre !
– Carter Brown was one of my best friends and the very first person to break my mold as a metal bassist , being the first metal drummer I was ever in a band with we were the glue of my first band possess the asylum and became extremely close very fast , over the years and even after the band broke up he always pushed me to be a better version of myself , stay away from bad habits or situations. He was a fantastic musician , and the greatest human being I ever met , this coming July I will also be holding another memorial event in his name with all proceeds going to charity , as I want to insure people remember what a great human being he was
– Warwick basses , for making my favourite instruments on this planet , quite literally you can do anything with these and they inspire me to play more and more because of the quality of them, I also have to say it’s still crazy that I can call myself a Warwick artist as no other brand has really been that involved with me and are all around some of the nicest people I’ve interacted with showing that a company can still be so human
-lastly my mother Nina Laidlaw , for showing me that there is positivity in absolutely any situation , showing me that kindness speaks louder than trying to be better than anyone and that you can always follow your heart . She’s is one of the strongest people I know mentally and to me why I believe that I choose kindness over anything else
