Meet Katy Rice | Cosmetic and Paramedical Tattoo Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katy, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I worked in the medical field for 6+ years and absolutely loved it. I loved the connections I got to make with patients and cohorts, and I felt good about the impact I was making. However, my job became very limiting and I was beginning to feel the “burnout”. I got to a point where I no longer felt I could grow my skills or career. I chose cosmetic and paramedical tattooing because I get to challenge myself everyday and the growing is limitless. I get to have autonomy over my work. And my client and I get to work together to create something beautiful and unique! I love that I get to make an impact on someone’s life with art!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in Lip Blush and Areola Restoration. Lip blush is a semi permanent cosmetic tattoo that deposits pigment into the lip tissue, giving your lips gorgeous shape and color! Areola Restorative Tattoo is a permanent, superficial solution to re-pigment and add a 3D Nipple and Areola to the breasts or chest. It gives closure and healing to cancer survivors who have been through reconstructive surgery, or people who are transitioning. We are a collection of master artists that specialize in the services we offer. Rather than one artist taking on every cosmetic tattoo service there is to offer, we each offer 1-2 services that we have truly mastered. It’s important to us to produce work that is the absolute best! This is not an easy industry to be in and it has become heavily saturated. We continue to grow and set ourselves apart each day by producing beautiful work that we are proud of! We are constantly networking, utilizing social media to meet and connect with our community. My biggest lesson I have learned from working in this industry is patience is everything! A business doesn’t just happen over night and neither does skill. Give yourself time to grow as an artist and a business!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have only lived in AZ for about a year and a half! So I am still exploring around and learning my favorite spots to go. But I love the area our studio is located called Kierland Commons, so many cute shops and restaurants. I would take them to hotel valley ho for the day at the pool and dinner after! And then I’d take them up to flagstaff to go exploring!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The two biggest shoutouts I have to give are the owners of our studio, Daela Cosmetic Tattoo and my dear friends, Chloe and Haley Wight. They came to me 2 years ago and asked me if this was a career that would interest me. Sometimes, you need a reminder from the people around you that you CAN do it. You can change your life. If it weren’t for them, I don’t think I would be where I am at today! They were by my side every step of the way and gave me a foundation, and confidence to grow my career!
