We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Kierman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Allison, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Consistency. I feel being consistent is the most important key to success for business owners. You have to show up – mentally, physically, and emotionally – every day. Even when you do not want to. You have to market, reach out, solicit, and communicate daily to ensure your client base. You have to meet deadlines and fulfill your promises, to every client, every day. You have to be nice and friendly and funny to everyone; even when you’re experiencing a hardship. You have to make a connection with someone new every day, even when it seems like you have nothing in common.

There are millions of books on how to create and run a successful company. The key is to actually follow the tools, ideas, and advice and do it consistently, so you do not falter.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the Managing Partner of Kierman Law, PLC, an estate planning and probate law firm in Arizona. I started the firm after practicing in the Valley for more than 10 years as a way to set my own hours, set my own pricing, and be more present in the lives of my children. Everyone always tells me it was a huge risk to start my own practice. It did not really feel like a risk at the time, however. I started with small goals.

On my first day, I met the financial goal I set for my first month. I was lucky, a friend gave my name to her brother and he called me and hired me right away. Every day and month after that, I have continued to focus on my goals, my family, and be thankful for every introduction I have received.

Covid was stressful for me. Unlike many, I was extraordinarily business. Everyone who ever thought they could become ill and needed a power of attorney, overnight wanted one ASAP. I worked late into the night 7 days a week to meet this client demand. At one point, I was irritated my daughter was taking so long to say goodnight because I had to get back to work. That was a huge wake up call for me. I had forgotten one of my personal goals was to be present for my family. Who wouldn’t want a goodnight hug and kiss from their adorable daughter. I had to adjust my client expectations and working hours.

It’s important to always revisit your goals and measure whether you are fulfilling them – both in terms of time and money.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Arizona. In the area, my favorite spots are the Desert Botanical Gardens, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and Saguaro Lake (the hike around the lake is beautiful in the spring). I recently took my kids to the Western Spirit Museum and everyone loved it. It was the perfect combination of education and Wild West fun. We also are regulars at the Musical Instruments Museum.

Our local dining options can compete internationally, in my opinion. For date nights and special occasions: Cafe Monarch, Course, Restaurant Progress, and Virtu. For a guaranteed good mean: Fire at Will (yes, get the burger), Zinc Bistro (my son loves the duck ravioli), and Grassroots (they have the good ice). For drinks in Old Town, Scapegoat Beer and Wine and The Beverly are go tos.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
