Meet Amairany Avila | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amairany Avila and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amairany, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business focuses on sharing raw and authentic moments between couples, families, and creatives. I believe it is important to share people’s beauty as is. I pride myself in not altering or photoshopping people’s physical appearance in my photos because I want to highlight those people’s natural beauty. I think that people (women especially) have this pressure to fit into society’s beauty standards. When you’re in front of my camera I want you to feel super confident and comfortable in your own skin. I believe that my business is helping the community break these societal standards and embracing themselves as they are.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A photo session with Brim Studio is such an experience! I make it my mission to become friends with my clients. When they book me for a session I want them to feel like they are meeting up with a friend, not just a stranger with a camera. I am your photographer bestie! It was not easy to attract clientele. I faced challenges with feeling like my work was not good enough to share. I overcame that by just shooting ALL of the time. I started off with begging my friends to model for me at cool places around the Valley. Practice, practice, practice. Once I built up my portfolio a bit more word of mouth became the number one source of my bookings. The number one lesson I have learned along the way has been to stop comparing myself and my work to others. Community over competition has been my mantra lately. There are so many photographers that I look up to and admire. I hope to be that for someone else too. I want Brim Studio to keep pushing boundaries and challenge society’s beauty standards and share real people. All are accepted here at Brim Studio.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to see Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe bend! It’s so magical there it doesn’t even look real. For drinks I would take them to have drinks at Valley Bar in downtown Phoenix. The vibes are immaculate there. If we were to go on a brunch date I would take them to the Vig downtown and then grab some coffee and a concha at Tres Leches cafe afterwards. Coming on a First Friday weekend would be a must so we could walk down Roosevelt Row and see all the vendors, get some good food, and get matching permanent bracelets done by JaydedJewlery!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe everything to my parents! They have been my biggest fans and supporters since day one. Without their support I wouldn’t be where I am today. From my dad helping me build my in-home studio to my mom helping me buy props for photo sessions in the early days of my business they have helped me so much. Just the fact that they didn’t turn me away when I came to them with my vision of becoming a photographer is huge! In our culture following a creative route for a career/business isn’t common. Even with that, they have been cheering me on. When I book a huge project like a wedding they are the first ones I call. They believed in me when I started to have doubts about my business and if I would ever be successful. I owe everything to them. Gracias mama y papa. Los amo!
