We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hannah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I strongly believe in work life balance, and I wanted to have more freedom in my schedule. My work allows me to travel, and I’m able to explore new places before or after my project is completed. As a creative, I was not cut out for the 9-5 life and being in the same office every day. With my own business, I get to meet new people, learn a multitude of topics, and still have plenty of time for my personal hobbies!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always loved taking notes in classes and workshops, and making them look pretty is as much fun as learning the content and documenting the most important parts. I have the gift of ADHD, so actively listening, capturing key notes, and turning them into visual maps feels like my brain is functioning at its best! These skills, as well as involving the audience in the event, makes events easier to remember and more engaging for attendees. And the speakers love to see their words become art! I get most excited when I capture key quotes or phrases and turn them into a graphic people can use in their future work or teaching others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love to hike, so Camelback is a must! Then I can show off Phoenix to my friends from the summit. Happy hour or dinner would be at AZ88 for a martini and enjoying whatever current art is exhibited. I like to walk over to Grapevine after that for a karaoke-filled night!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest shout out goes to my mom! I didn’t know the field of graphic recording existed until she told me about it. She encouraged me to take the workshop to learn how to do it and start my own business. She’s my biggest cheerleader, as well as the rest of my family.
