We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Sumlin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success has been consistency paired with authenticity. I’ve built my brand by showing up every single day, staying connected to the culture and creating content that genuinely reflects who I am. People don’t just follow me for posts or videos, they follow because they trust my voice and know I’m tapped into what’s happening in Phoenix nightlife, entertainment, pop culture, and the community.

I also think versatility has played a huge role. I’ve been able to blend radio, social media, event hosting, influencer marketing, and community engagement into one ecosystem instead of relying on just one lane. That consistency, combined with being relatable and transparent, has allowed my brand to grow organically and build real relationships with people online and in real life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is storytelling through culture, conversation, and connection. Whether it’s through radio, social media, hosting events, interviewing celebrities, or creating content around nightlife and the Phoenix community, everything I do is rooted in making people feel seen, informed, and entertained. I think what sets me apart is that I’ve never tried to be anyone else. I’ve built my platform by being authentic, consistent, and deeply connected to the people and culture around me.

I’m proud that I’ve been able to turn my voice and perspective into a brand that people genuinely trust. I’ve grown an audience across radio and social media by staying tapped into what people care about and presenting it in a way that feels relatable and real. I’m especially excited about continuing to grow as a media personality and creator while also helping spotlight local businesses, artists, events, and voices that deserve more attention.

Getting to where I am today definitely wasn’t easy. There were a lot of moments where things didn’t go as planned, opportunities that didn’t work out, and times where I had to reinvent myself professionally. Social media and media in general move fast, so I’ve had to learn how to adapt, stay creative under pressure, and keep showing up even when things felt uncertain. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that consistency matters more than perfection. If you keep creating, keep learning, and keep believing in your vision, eventually people will start to see it too.

I also learned that your authenticity is your superpower. The moments my brand grew the most were the moments I stopped trying to fit into a mold and leaned fully into being myself. I want the world to know that my story is still being written. I’m someone who genuinely loves people, culture, entertainment, and community, and my goal has always been to create spaces and conversations that bring people together. More than anything, I want my brand to represent passion, transparency, creativity, and showing others that you can build something meaningful simply by being yourself and staying committed to your craft.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend Corbin from Morehouse College came to Phoenix for a week, I’d want to show him the real energy of the city. We’ve been friends for over 10 years, so the trip would honestly be a mix of great food, culture, nightlife, and genuine conversations.

We’d start with some of my favorite food spots around Phoenix, then head downtown to Roosevelt Row to check out the murals, coffee shops, and creative scene. I’d definitely take him to The Grand because I think it’s one of the best places in the city to experience music and nightlife. We’d probably hit a Suns game or concert if something was happening too.

I’d also want him to experience Arizona wellness culture, maybe an IV therapy session or a relaxing recovery day, followed by a good dinner spot. One day would have to be dedicated to the desert, whether that’s hiking Camelback or just catching a sunset somewhere with a great view.

Most importantly, I’d introduce him to the people who make Phoenix special — creators, DJs, entrepreneurs, artists, and all the personalities helping shape the culture here. To me, Phoenix is one of the most underrated cities in the country because there’s so much creativity, ambition, and community here if you really tap in.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to my dad. Growing up, one of the biggest things I admired about him was that he was always unapologetically himself. He was a man of faith, believed in himself, laughed loudly, and always gave his best effort no matter what. Watching that as a kid really shaped me. He showed me the importance of confidence, authenticity, and carrying yourself with purpose. A lot of the way I move through life and build my brand comes from the example he set for me.
