We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Gomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannon, how does your business help the community or the world?
Rebel Deck LLC is a brand that creates spiritual and self-development tools that are real and relatable. The messages in these decks are very raw. Currently, there is a movement of Love & Light in the spiritual community, and while the intent is good, it can feel hollow. Rebel Deck is all about being authentic. People who are into self-work are digging deep and don’t need the pressure of being “high vibe” all the time. This deck uses language that people can relate to. It also cuts through the unrealistic standard that if you are just positive, life will be rainbows and unicorns. Life has ups and downs and acknowledging tough moments doesn’t make you less spiritual. I believe it makes you more. Rebel Decks is for all people, all the time, regardless of how high they vibe. Rebel Deck is a brand where you can meditate and also embrace lots of f-bombs.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I come from a Chinese Medicine background. I had never created a deck or any type of “art” before in my life. I made the Orginal Deck after the birth of my 3rd child. I was going through a tough time and I needed something to pick me up. I needed something that wasn’t all syrupy sweet because that is just not my personality. Not finding that kind of deck, I decided to make my own. These decks have tough love messages like when your best friend talks to you. I want people to know that they are not alone with tough emotions. I also want them to know that they don’t ever need to stay in that tough place. Whether they find support in spirituality, therapy, exercise, therapeutics, or community, there is always a way out. Even if it doesn’t feel like it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So if I had to plan my favorite day in Phoenix, it would be to start with a sunrise hike on South Mountain. Cold-brew from Human Bean, breakfast at Matt’s Big Breakfast, lunch at Cafe Lalibela, hanging out at the pool at one of the local resorts, then dinner a taco truck. I’d end the night listening to live local music downtown sipping Tequila.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to the supporters of Rebel Deck on Social Media. I started Rebel Deck without having any social media presence. I had never even been on Instagram. And since the launch of Rebel Deck, we have grown to almost 16k of organic supporters. These people give me feedback, are advocates for the brand, and have the best sense of humor. They are awesome and I am so blessed to be able to grow this brand with their support.
