We had the good fortune of connecting with Paige Weber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paige, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The one decision that pivoted my life and career was the decision to go back to college at age 26. At that point I had a career in accounting. I didn’t necessarily need to go back to school. However, when I made a job change at the time, I had to start all over – at the bottom. I wanted to be able to make choices for myself and felt a college degree was what I needed to do that. I also didn’t want to spend 20 years in accounting; I wanted to be an artist. Even though I was scared, questioned my abilities, even my intelligence, I enrolled in school. It brought me many opportunities, but more importantly, it gave me confidence and grit.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The truth is I like a good challenge. That is why I named my small business Gumption. I spent years working and going to school to become a better artist. I am proud of that. I believe in the saying, “Nothing worthwhile comes easily.” Over time my work has evolved. Currently, my art focuses on travel, nature, and wildlife—all loves of mine. I also dabble in fun illustrations for my sticker line. I stay true to what I am passionate about, and I think that resonates with my collectors.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My absolute favorite place in Phoenix is the Desert Botanical Garden. It’s a must-see. If you have time, eat dinner there. It’s kind of magical!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A big shoutout goes to both my mom and to my husband. My mom always pushed me to excel. She wanted so much more for me and really encouraged me to go to college. Though she is now gone her lessons resonate with me daily. My husband also deserves credit for supporting me while I finished out graduate school. He whole heartedly supports my dreams, and I am grateful for him.
