We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Borges-Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have enjoyed being creative for as long as i can remember., and strangely enough I always found painting rewarding. I was a stay at home mom, but when my son started kindergarten I found myself with a lot of time on my hands. I still wanted to be accessible for him but I also started wanting to buy nicer things, and I didn’t want to feel guilty about buying them.. I thought if I could buy, flip, then sell a couple items a month it would give me extra spending money and it was completely flexible around my family.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It doesn’t always happen right away but at some point a vision pops into my head of what each piece will look like. I learned so many things the hard way, and did things so many different ways. I tried so many different products, but I never gave up.
The inspiration for my logo is Rosie the riveter because she’s symbolizes a tough hardworking woman, and that’s what i am.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s funny because I’ve lived in Oro Valley (Tucson) for 5 1/2 years and while I have grown to love it here I don’t know it well. So if I had a friend visiting. I would want to take them to a couple great Mexican Restaurants which would be Teresa’s Mosaic Cafe and El Molinitos. A couple of my other local favorites are Baja cafe and Bison Witches. If we wanted to do an afternoon of shopping I’d take her to Tucson Premium Outlets then have drinks at Nobel Hops. They have bands on their outdoor patio on the weekends. Another beautiful and unique place is Orehouse Hilltop Tavern in Oracle, which is about 30 miles north of me.
I would probably take them on a drive through Catalina State Park. It’s only about 5 miles from my house and it’s beautiful. Some other favorites are Mt Lemmon, Biosphere and Reid Park Zoo is amazing. It’s smaller so you get to see all the animals up close. I would also add in an overnight to Sedona in there somewhere.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All my family and friends who have been encouraging and supportive. Also, I have watched countless YouTube videos of Kacha, and Brushed by Brandy. And I’ve taken a number of courses from Brittany Pistole, Funky furniture facelifts.
