We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawna Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shawna, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk has played a huge part in where I am today. I took a chance one day and answered the phone that led me to attend massage school here in the valley. I toured the school on a Friday, signed up and did orientation on Saturday and started school on Monday. All of this involved risk, I took a chance with no job prospects, no place to stay, a new city, and not knowing anyone. But with determination and will, I found a roommate, it took me a few weeks but I found a two jobs. So I worked full time and attended school full time. So risk, I think risk is an important part of personal growth, it allowed me (forced me really) to get out of my comfort zone and get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m most proud of going into sports massage. I had instructors tell me how hard and time consuming sports would be. Time away from family, long days and late hours. That I needed certain degrees or that as a female I wouldn’t make it in sports massage.

So I’m proud, that with all of my hard work, and just one year out of school, I started working with PRO and elite level athletes. And three years later I’m still going strong and busier than ever.

I made a vision board in school and one of my quotes was “work until you don’t have to introduce yourself”. And over the last two years, that has come true, my client base is strictly referral based, I don’t advertise and lately athletes have introduced themselves to me.

It’s such an awesome feeling to know that my clients believe in me so much that they tell their friends, teammates and family about me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow, umm can I skip this one? Lol.

I’ve been to Tempe Improv and it was a great night, tons of laughs and great place to take friends.

Gilbert Farmers market on Saturdays is my go to for produce and supporting local farms and businesses and omg the food trucks there are great.

Always support my athletes at, Iron Man events, the coyotes, suns and cardinals basically supporting our local athletes.

Movie nights in the park in Mesa or star gazing in Tucson.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out to my daughter, Sparrowhawk and my husband David. Through this crazy idea of me going back to school, moving us all to a different state, putting all our time and effort into my new business, they both have been my cheerleaders, late night study sessions and encouraging words to get me through. We lived a apart for almost a year so I could follow a dream and not once did they tell me it was too hard. And through all our sacrifices and months of phone calls , it all paid off. I couldn’t have made it without their support.

I would also like to shout out Christy Swiatkowski, LMT Owner/Creator of
SportStretch® USA. A little background on SportStretch®:

“SportStretch® is a floor mat, movement based, customizable full body routine that consists of both actively and passively stretching a client. Christy has uniquely incorporated a combination of techniques such as Thai Massage, Compression, Active Isolated Stretching (AIS), Ashiatsu, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), Post Isometric Relaxation (PIR), Traction and various Myofascial and Myoskeletal techniques to create the SportStretch® routine.”

Meeting and learning from Christy has been a game changer in my career. She has provided unique opportunities for not only me but other massage therapists to work on college and Pro athletes. I am beyond grateful for the amazing opportunities she provided me from, teaching me the stretch routine, selecting me for the 2021 Senior Bowl, 2022 Shrine Bowl and the 2022 NFL Combine. So a HUGE shout out and Thank You to her for providing these amazing opportunities.
