We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexa Ray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexa, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for my business originated from my own experience both as an independent artist/singer and online shopper. I was finding it increasingly difficult to style looks for events, photo shoots and performances that were both quality, affordable and made a statement that fit my branding needs.

Branding is just as important as the art one creates. In my own experience I was constantly met with the challenge of exclusivity within the industry and a lack of support or services for independent artists when it came to branding. This sparked the idea for Stage 9 Secrets. Funneling everything I would have wanted as a young artist into the foundation of the company, I built an e-commerce shopping platform where the support of artists and professionals are the center of the brand and a unique focus to offer statement pieces that celebrate one’s unique personality.

What should our readers know about your business?
While we are an inclusive environment and serve everyone’s evening wear needs including special occasion, prom, pageant, wedding and more, Stage 9 Secrets aims to be more then just another online dress store.

In addition to styling, we are actively building a community where support for artists, creators and professionals are our core initiative. Though our blogs, affiliate programs and a directory of recommended industry services, we aim to offer additional resources to connect and empower individuals and young professionals in their career. As we continue to grow our vision, our goal is to expand what we offer both in services and product.

Many new businesses face challenges when first starting out and our experience was no different, particularly while navigating the pandemic. Early on our company faced many obstacles that forced us to learn essential skills such as being adaptive and thinking outside the box for solutions. As a business owner I feel 90% of my day to day is problem solving and an infinite willingness to learn, a much needed skill in order to continue to grow.

Listening to start up journeys and other business podcasts was extremely helpful in learning how others were innovating and dealing with certain aspects of the business. While there have been many challenges starting up, seeing our customers dressed to the nines and featured in editorials wearing our designs is extremely rewarding and an affirmation that we are accomplishing what we set out to do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Something I absolutely love about Toronto is how dynamic of a city it is. There are so many pockets to explore that are rich in both culture and cuisine and honestly the list of amazing spots goes on forever. Depending on the time of year there is always lots to see and do. If visiting in the Winter I would be sure to plan an outing that includes skate on the iconic Nathan Philip Square located in the heart of the city. This would be followed by a visit to Toronto’s Distillery Village which during the cold season is a picture-perfect winter experience of buskers, vendors, photo walls and shopping along the the historic cobble stone streets and thriving arts community.

I would end the day with the one place I always take friends when they visit from out of town, the 360 Restaurant. This restaurant is located at the top of the CN Tower which offers a stunning 360 view at sunset over the entire city. For anyone who hasn’t been to Toronto before, this is a perfect way to see one of the wonders of the world as well as the landscape of Toronto.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s true what they say about a village of support behind every story of success, and mine is no different. I have been surrounded by many inspiring and tenacious individuals over the years who been an example of success and given me confidence to pursue my passions. I have also been blessed with an incredible partner who has been supportive my journey both as a musician and my business aspirations. His technical knowledge of the e-commerce world compliments my creative ability and vision. Without him the business would not have be able to take off.
