We had the good fortune of connecting with Sachiko Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sachiko, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Social media is scary–terrifying, even. With every photo, comment, or video you post, you’re submitting yourself to the judgements of not only your friends and family, but also to complete strangers. However, with the influx of our generation’s social media influencers, TikTok stars, and YouTubers, more and more people want to use social media platforms as a means of building a community and perhaps even making a living out of content creation.

As someone who recently began my journey as a “content creator” on Instagram, I often have people come to me saying they wish they could also post videos but are too afraid of what their friends might think. Although I have mostly overcome this fear, I 100% sympathize with their hesitation. I believe getting started is the most difficult part because you don’t know how people will react. Creating videos and putting yourself on the internet can be risky–people might hate what you make. But what I always tell myself is that people might also LOVE what you make. So take the risk! If you want to post dance videos or make a podcast or vlog your day, you should just do it.

Taking risks and overcoming my own fears of posting online is one thing I will never regret. It has allowed me to explore my own creativity and has also been the gateway to meeting amazing people and getting so many new opportunities. I feel like I have the freedom to post whatever I love and be 100% myself online. And I believe the only reason I was able to get to this point is because people see that I am just having fun and that I am passionate about the things I create, which makes them want to support me. I am so incredibly grateful to the people who love and support whatever I make, even if it’s completely different from my usual content.

I want to emphasize that if you want to find any success in social media, there is nothing more important than forming genuine connections with people. Talk to people, show them that you appreciate their support, and show your own support to them as well. The more you do this, the less scary posting online becomes. Once you begin forming this type of community, you will learn that there will always be people who want to support you no matter what, which gives you the freedom to take risks and experiment.

My hope is that anyone who truly wants to create a space for themselves on social media can do so without stopping themselves out of fear. Sometimes you just have to do it and hope for the best, otherwise you will just be asking yourself “what if?”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a half-Japanese university student who makes videos about anime and cosplay! Although I only started posting videos in February of 2022, I feel that I have created a space where all anime fans can feel welcome. I try to post videos everyday that people can relate to or laugh at. My followers often tell me that my videos make their day, which I believe is because I’m a very cheerful person and I try to spread positivity to others as much as I can through my online presence. I try to show kindness to everyone by talking and interacting with the people who watch my videos. Because of this, I feel that my page has become a very wholesome and wonderful community of people who all share a common interest!

So how did I build this community in the first place? Well, it definitely had it’s challenges. As someone who grew up rather shy and reserved, putting myself out onto the internet was not easy. Even today I still doubt my own creative abilities and question whether or not I am good enough to be a content creator. I had always looked up to other creators and TikTokers who had enough confidence, creativity, and consistency to build their social platforms. They always made videos that I enjoyed, and I wanted to do the same. I had watched a number of people grow their following on Instagram by posting daily videos in the Instagram Reels feature. So I decided to try that–for the month of February, I challenged myself to post an Instagram Reels video every. single. day.

At first, it was just some of my friends seeing the videos. But eventually they began getting more views, and people began following me fairly quickly. I couldn’t believe the amount of support I was getting. I spent a lot of time replying to comments and answering DMs from people because I was so grateful to people for supporting my videos. I also began posting my videos on TikTok and I made a lot of amazing friends who also make anime videos. I was having so much fun that the month flew by and so I continued posting daily videos the next month and the month after that.

As rewarding as it was, I still struggled with self doubt and often felt insecure about my own videos. But I always told myself that posting something is better than posting nothing. I think many people, including myself, become perfectionists when looking at their own work. Sometimes I make a video and I think “this is cringe, no one will like this,” but then I post it anyways and it ends up doing amazingly well. Other times, I work really hard on something and it ends up completely flopping. The point is, I don’t think anyone can succeed on social media without taking those chances.

Despite all the self doubt, I am so so grateful to the people who support my videos and love what I make. I know that if it weren’t for their kind words and comments, I would not have had the confidence or the strength to continue creating as much as I do now. I started this journey for fun–because I love making videos, but connecting with so many people has been far more rewarding than the actual content creation itself. I’ve learned that yes, the internet can be a scary place. There will always be people who want to put others down for no reason. But I’ve also found that there are SO many kind and lovely people out there, and I am so thankful to have attracted these people to my page.

I hope that my page can inspire people to smile, create, be silly, and have fun. I think that people can see from my content that I am also on my own journey of self acceptance and that I am learning how to be confident in myself. I want others to grow with me so that they too can have the freedom to lie their best lives and follow their own dreams and aspirations. If you want to walk around in public dressed as your favourite anime character, just do it! 🙂

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I actually grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona, but I am currently living in Toronto, Canada as I attend university here. Growing up in a small town like Flagstaff made me develop a deep sense of appreciation for hiking and nature; however, I have also learned to fall in love with the excitement of the city life here in Toronto as well.

If a friend were to come visit me in Toronto for a week, I would definitely love to walk around the city with them. When the weather is nice, walking along the Lake Ontario harbourfront of Toronto is very beautiful. My friend and I could grab bubble tea at one of the countless tea shops here, and then walk along the waterside and view the skyline of all the tall Toronto buildings. Additionally, we could ride the ferry to to Toronto islands, where we could walk through the gardens and the beaches and maybe even rent a double bike to ride around the island neighborhoods. I have always loved being near the ocean, so the lake is the next best thing.

For an indoor adventure, I would take my friend to some of the art galleries and museums here in Toronto. For example, the Royal Ontario Museum is free on Tuesday’s for students, and it is one of my favourite places in Toronto. There are so many different sections including Dinosaurs to European style. My favourite is the realistic bat cave that you can walk through. I would also take my friend to the Art Gallery of Ontario, which features an amazing assortment of different art styles. I love looking at and learning about the art of Indigenous Canadians.

As for food, there is an insanely diverse selection in Toronto. I am vegan, and I find that most places have vegan options these days. One of my favourite places to eat is in Toronto’s Koreatown. I love getting soon dubu jjigae, or soft sofu stew! I also know some amazing Japanese and Thai restaurants around the city that I think anyone would love.

If my friend is an anime fan like me, I would show them around all the manga shops that I have discovered while living here. I never really had any manga shops growing up, so having so many within walking distance of me now is amazing! I would also take my friend to some of the cute anime and K-pop shops in Toronto. If my friend is lucky, maybe they even came on a week when a K-pop band is performing in Toronto! If so, I would have to take them there. Toronto is a hub for so many talented artists to perform shows. I have seen a number of amazing plays and music shows while living in Toronto, and I think live entertainment is always a fun experience.

If we had more time, I might take my friend to High Park, which is a lovely nature area. We could hike, ride the tram, and look at capybaras in the small free zoo in the park. I could also take my friend to Canada’s Wonderland, which is a fin amusement park with lots of huge roller coasters! It makes for a really fun day.

Overall, I have grown to feel very at home in Toronto, so I would love to show anyone around the city!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As cliché as this may sound, I would love to just say a huge thank you to anyone who supports me and my videos–whether they are my friends or people who just happened to stumble across my videos. Their sweet comments always make my day and they are the reason that I love making videos so much. It means more to me than they know and I wish I could give them all a big hug!!

I would also love to say thank you to all the other anime content creators for constantly being my inspiration!
