We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Childs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Without risk, my career would be non-existent. That’s how it is when you go full-time with music, or with any creative career. The risk of an initial leap of faith, followed by continual leaps with no safety net, are the stepping stones that lead to independent success.

For me, I quit my full-time job with no money and no lifeboat. Thanks to a lot of hard work, but even more faith, 2 1/2 years later I’m doing a better than I was before.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My story is a story of second chances, but more than that, a story of victory despite the odds. After years of enduring intense stress at a full-time job, I quit one night in frustration. My wife asked me “what are we going to do?” I told her “I’m going to hit the street and find bars to play music at. We’re gonna go full-time in music.”

It was rough at first. But miraculously, I was able to secure client after client. And as of now, I’m playing shows five nights per week, and recently released my first original album. It’s surreal to see how far things have come.

Back when I was stuck at my job, the only escape I had was to take my wife and get away to nearby beach towns for the weekend. We would have an amazing time, but when I would get back to work, I’d often end up with stress again. So, I’d lock my office door, pull out my guitar, and sing. During some of those moments, I wrote songs about our weekend getaways, and it brought me relief.

Those songs, “Sanibel Day” and “Siesta Key”, made it onto the album. As did an anthem I wrote called “Quit My Job”. And now, playing live at local beach bars and resorts, I share the songs and my story with people from all over the world. My desire is that it’ll bring them a little hope, and of course, an escape.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to my wife Norma, because over the past ten years she has been by my side through thick and thin. We’ve been through rough circumstances and abundant times too. Through all of it, she has been so supportive of me and has been my rock. I thank God for her.
