We had the good fortune of connecting with Lacey Haegen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lacey, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe that the most important factor behind the success of Beaute Nouveau®️ is in our clarity and commitment to our values. We have 9 core values that inform our decisions, creations, and how we treat each other. Our goal is to treat everyone we encounter as we would hope to be treated ourselves. You know, the Golden Rule! Consistently acting on the intention to always take the best care of people builds trust, and is the foundation for supporting clients and growing business. Our clients know we value them as people, that we greatly appreciate their business, and they come back again and again. Their trust and belief in us is our true success. Keeping in alignment with our core values has guided us in creating a comprehensive collection of truly botanical, and ultra luxurious skin care products that our clients trust and love. How all of this works together is what has created our success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a career Makeup Artist, I’ve touched the faces of thousands of women as they sat in my makeup chair and shared about themselves. At a certain point, I noticed that no woman had ever sat in my chair, looked me in the eyes, and told me what she loved about herself, or how she mattered. There was always a question in her eyes, as if asking: am I pretty enough? Am I good enough? The question my clients always asked me was: How can I “fix”…fill in the blank. My heart aches every time I hear this question. Why do we think we need to “fix” ourselves? My vision is that one day, we won’t feel like we have to ask this question anymore. I hope that we just know how wonderful and valuable we are. I hope we are so busy celebrating our accomplishments and feeling great about ourselves that it never crosses our minds to seek out ways to “fix” ourselves.

My mission is to shift the question of “are we enough” to the statement that we are “MORE THAN ENOUGH.” It’s time to drop the old story that our “beauty” equals any part of our value.

All of our products are made to simply take care of you – while you go out and be YOU. Period. Not to change you, or fix you, or make you more beautiful. We just want to help you prepare yourself each morning as you go out and reach towards your dreams, and help you repair yourself each evening from the work you did during the day. Every day we work hard to get bigger and stronger so we can support as many women as possible and reach our collective greatness.
Beaute Nouveau®️ as a business is where it is today because everyday I think about the women in my makeup chair and my hopes for all of us to freely be who we are and who we want to be. Our Mission and Vision is clear and top of mind in everything we do. I believe our clients feel that we truly care for their wellbeing and therefore they care for us.

Was building this business easy? Yes and no. Some things have clicked into place as if Angels were conducting a symphony, and some things have been an exhausting slog. It’s always fabulous when things happen easily, but the real growth comes from overcoming the challenges. That’s where the learning and inspiration often really comes from. But for me, the real wisdom came after multiple years that had included countless disappointments and opportunities that didn’t “work out”, positioned me to be able to look back in the rear view mirror and grasp the profound realization that none of the experiences that I had thought were derailing in the moment…actually were. After years of collecting these experiences and being able to see that something wonderful always shows up eventually, and often what shows up is better than what I had thought was the ultimate before, I can now operate in a much more balanced way. I am much less likely to react emotionally or get derailed by something not working out as I had imagined or hoped. It takes much less energy to let it go and move onto the next idea or direction. Ultimately, it is the realization that this journey is not about me, it’s about what happens in and for people, when we do what we do. Being the best for people so they can be their best is where the magic is.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting, our most fun weekend would look like this: On the first day, we would park in the public parking lot that is right on the bay on Harbor Island at 11 am. We would walk down to the restaurant Coasterra and be first in line at 11:30 when they open. We would rush in and ask for a table right over the water facing downtown and then order house margaritas and fish tacos while enjoying the bay, the view, the boats, and the sunshine. Then we would walk back to the car, retrieve our backpacks, and head over to the sailing club we belong to across the street where we would take out a small sailboat and set sail for the bay. After sailing for a few hours we would head in, gather ourselves, hop in the car, and tootle over to Eppig Brewery on Shelter Island for a flight of microbrews and a barstool perched right over the bay. Before heading home for a bbq, we would walk next door to Pt. Loma Seafood and pick up some of their candied salmon and a piece of fish to grill. Dinner would be a lovely piece of fish and a crisp salad with my coveted buttermilk cilantro dressing, punctuated with lots of stories and laughing.

On Day 2 I would start us off by making eggs daffodil and iced coffee and pack a picnic for a day at the beach. We would load up the car with our beach supplies and sun tent and head to the beach at Coronado. We would swoosh across the Coronado bridge and slide right into a perfect parking spot that was waiting just for us. We would set up camp at the beach for a few hours, swim in the ocean, and snooze in the sun tent. At about 3:00 we would pack up our gear and head home base to shower, refresh, and regroup for a 6:00 dinner reservation at one of my all time favorite restaurants: Bleu Boheme in Kensington. Rustic, yet bougie décor with medieval wax dripping candelabras and sultry lighting, and in my opinion the best French cuisine, cocktails, and vibe in urban San Diego. I love this place because whether you show up in flip-flops or fancy, you are sure to have the best experience and leave feeling like the bourgeoisie.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One of my biggest supporters, and sometimes challengers, has been my Mom, Holly. She is an entrepreneur and has been self-employed since her 20’s. She has founded multiple businesses and has always been a savvy business woman. Growing up it never felt far-fetched to start or run a business, it actually seemed like the best way to make money. I was encouraged to start multiple businesses before I was out of high school. I picked figs from a neighbor’s giant tree and sold them in front of a store one summer (then was hired by the store for the school year). For two summers, 3 friends and I started a summer camp for 30 kids. It was always more fun to come up with a micro-business idea than work a job for an hourly wage. The mantra in my family was clear: working for yourself was freedom and offered the most opportunity. My Mom never encouraged me otherwise. She encouraged me to try things, and then try other things, too learn by experimenting.

She constantly said, “feel the fear and do it anyway” and “always bet on yourself.” She is a master at shifting a meltdown into action and moving onto the next idea. She also made it clear that building a business is something you get to create as you go along and build it as you see it in your imagination. She encouraged me to create something new and different and never follow the crowd. She has always run her business with the highest level of ethics, treated her team with absolute respect, and cultivated a pristine reputation. Watching her and learning from her while she worked in her businesses was a huge gift for my career as an entrepreneur. Most of all, she always says, “you can do this.”
