Meet Megan Maloy | Salon Owner and Holistic Hairstylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Maloy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business was a way for me to create a space that would fuel the creativity and passion for my craft, and provide a place to call home for other talent in this industry. I have always been a ‘go-getter” so to speak, and although I knew owning a business would not be easy, I also felt called to contribute to my community in this way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Once upon a time, I wanted to go to medical school. I wanted to heal; to make people feel good. At the end of the day, I decided it wasn’t the right fit for me. I still wanted to make people feel good, and when you look good, you feel good. So as a budding hairstylist, that’s what I was all about…utilizing clean products in what was known as such a toxic industry. As my career continued, I realized that being a hairstylist is so much more than making someone look good…you develop relationships with your clients and they open up to you and become like family. You go through heartbreaks, deaths, job promotions, pregnancies, new dogs, and everything in between. My love for doing hair became about the relationships I built. My brand has always been focused on clean, sustainable beauty. I knew so many stylists in the industry whose bodies were destroyed by toxic chemicals, their hands bleeding and cracking from severe skin allergies, their lungs struggling from years of breathing in fumes. I based my entire business around using safe products that were free of toxic chemicals, that were vegan and cruelty-free, and would give the best results for the client and stylist alike, the animals, and the environment. Back when I started my salon, these types of products were extremely hard to come by and I had to import most of our products from other countries that had stricter laws in place in regards to safe products.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ah the magic of Arizona! As a native, I love showing people all that our wonderful state has to offer. Assuming it’s not a million degrees out on our day of adventure, I would definitely start the day off right with a hike or out off-roading on our many wonderful trails here. Some other musts would be The Desert Botanical Gardens and the Music Instrument Museum (hear me out….this museum is FASCINATING and you will quickly realize you could spend an entire day there). For a longer trip, a visit up north to see the Grand Canyon is a must. Arizona is also full of really awesome breweries, such as Arizona Wilderness, Pedal Haus, and 12 West. Since one must eat, my favorite place to take people is Green New American Vegetarian (a fully vegan restaurant), which has two locations, one in Tempe and one in Scottsdale (which is next door to their sister company, Nami, which serves delicious coffee, desserts, ice cream, and treats). My other must stop, is True Food at the Biltmore, which you can easily pair with an afternoon out of shopping the local shops at the Biltmore.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success today would not be possible without the help of my mom and dad who financially supported me in the beginning, but continue to support me and the business to this day in many other ways. I also owe my sweet husband credit as he is always down to come do projects around the salon on the weekends, no matter what they are. I have had wonderful mentors and business coaches that have helped me to see things in a different light and encouraged my growth and thinking, and without them, my idealogical methods of how I do things would be outdated. Most importantly, the success we have had is due to the support and dedication of the staff we have and have had over the years. Without them, nothing I have here would be possible.
