We had the good fortune of connecting with Sylivia Love and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sylivia, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks has played a major role in my life by giving me confidence to be the person that I am today! When I first started college I tried to play it safe and I felt empty inside because to me playing it safe when you don’t have to didn’t bring me any fulfillment. I started to question myself and why I was playing it safe. After I changed my major and that relief was over, I decided to take another major risk by taking a solo trip to Bali, Indonesia. Months leading up to the trip, I was faced with doubts, people discouraging me and I didn’t feel like I could rise up to the occasion. As months turned into weeks turned into days the doubt started going away. I came to the conclusion “if I don’t do this, will I ever do anything worthwhile? “ and just like that I was headed to Bali! I was nervous the whole way there, but once I got there it wasn’t bad at all! I made a friend and we traveled within Bali together and made some of the best memories. Visited Kelingking beach which is one of the most visited beaches in the world located in Nusa Penida Island, went for a 5 hour long hike that started at 1 am, stayed in a 24 person hostal, fought a big cockroach in a bungalow, participated in quite a few excursions, and ate at local food spots.We were the definition of black girl joy! I still was solo most of the trip, my time spent by myself I was able to reflect about myself. I had felt a sense of freedom and in the 10 days I was there I had mentally grown so much. None of that would have happened if I didn’t take the risk! My heart yearned for fulfillment and I listened. I went on to become more confident in my actions and that has shaped me to be a better person! My advice to everyone is always take that risk that your mind and heart is yearning for, you won’t regret it!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I travel the world and share my experiences on social media platforms to inspire other black girls to travel. What sets me apart from everyone else is that I am just getting started! I’m a new grad that is eager to see and explore the world! The best part about travel is that everyone has a different experience and captures it differently as well! The most difficult challenge I’ve had to overcome in the Travel Content space is regularly posting on social media. I overcame that by reflecting on how much travel content I consumed in my younger ages. I also asked myself “if you are going to travel, and document it why not share with people”. I want people to know that they are capable of achieving what they want in life. All you have to do is set a plan and take small steps everyday to achieve what you want. The only person that can hold you back is you, if you let the naysayers get in your ear, will you ever be where you want to be?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family, close friends, and women in travel have inspired me to be the brave person that I am. Especially my parents, they took a risk and came all the way from Kenya for a better life! To leave what you have known all your life, where you have grown, where you have all your family to come to the unknown is inspiring and I am forever grateful! Vontay has always inspired me to be the best, most authentic version of myself which has led me to taking more positive risks in life! In my younger years I spent a lot of time watching women from different backgrounds, especially black women travel and I knew if they did it so could I! Anything is possible, if you believe!
