We had the good fortune of connecting with Mathew Passy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mathew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
At the time, I had been recently laid off from my long-time gig working for a major publisher doing a mix of radio and podcasting. While I was trying to find what my next full-time job would be, people that I used to do work with reached out and said that the podcasts we did together were very beneficial and they wanted to know if I could help them now. I figured I had all of the skills, and as long as I could do it, I figured why not. So I started to work with former colleagues on a very part-time basis, and the number of clients just kept growing and growing until I realized that I could be doing this full-time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I started, podcasting barely existed, and it was certainly not mainstream. My first job was working early morning hours (4 am) at an NJ-based talk and news radio station. And while I was there, the iPhone was introduced, and podcasts started to gain some traction. I spearheaded an effort to launch their first podcast. I then worked for a large international publishing company in their radio division doing half that and half podcasting. They were ahead of the curve in the space, and I gained a ton of confidence and experience launching, editing, producing, and promoting podcast content. When they decided to exit the radio business and layoff our entire team, I wasn’t thinking about starting my own business. But my work and reputation in the space led others to find me and gave me the confidence to go for it. I never imagined myself as an entrepreneur, but I am glad I went down this road.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In New York City, I’d probably try and get tickets to a broadway show, tickets to a NY Rangers game, see stand-up at one of the comedy clubs, check out the National History museum’s Hayden Planetarium, go to the top of the Empire State Building.

As far as places to eat, there are too many to list. But a few notable spots would be 5-Napkin, Blue Smoke, Butter, and Peter Lugers, but then the smaller places you pass along the way with an exciting menu and distinct cultural vibe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The person I would want to mention is one of my clients, and at the end of every podcast episode he asks, “what is the kindest thing anyone has done for you?”. I can say honestly that the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me was when Invest Like the Best’s Patrick O’Shaughnessy took a chance working with me to produce his podcast and then telling his network, guests, and others in his industry about my podcast production services. That kindness and willingness to share with others what services I offered and his faith in me played a crucial role in the success of this business.
