We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Spencer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I began thinking about wanting to have my own business so that I could have more flexibility with my time and not have to be confined to Monday -Friday 8-5pm. I wanted to be able to only see clients who I felt I could really help and who really wanted to facilitate change in their life. Since the financial outcome was unknown to me, that really wasn’t a huge factor in determining that I wanted to start my business however; it was a consideration as to when I started looking at being able to make that transition.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I graduated high school, I thought I wanted to go to college to become a physical therapist and so I did go into those classes and followed that path to working in the field while my husband finished his schooling. When he was finished and it was my turn to go back, I realized that what I liked about the work I was doing was getting to know the people, helping them through a difficult time so instead of pursuing physical therapy, I went back into psychology and counseling. This was the best decision I could have made as I thoroughly enjoyed my graduate program and internships. As I began working in the field of mental health and counseling, I learned what all the various settings were that could be practiced in and I did make the decision to work towards having my own business/practice. I learned from every job I ever had things that have contributed to me being successful today.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many great spots–depending of the time of year. I would love to take them on some hikes, trails and tours of historic sites. A day trip to see Sedona would be on the agenda as well. Tucson is known for its culture whether its food or art or festivals. There are many annual festivals, the 4th Avenue street fair is a wonderful example. Places of special interest like Biosphere 2 could also be added.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t have made the leap into private practice without the support and encouragement from husband Bryan–this was a change/transition that was going to affect our family and he had to be totally on board as well.
