We had the good fortune of connecting with Miwa Keys and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miwa, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I always loved Halloween, and going to my first convention where I saw people wearing cosplays even when it wasn’t Halloween was really cool to me. I wanted to do that, I wanted to bring to life characters that gave me and others so much joy! My family was very supportive and after making my first cosplay for Medli from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, I felt like I could create anything I put my mind to. I have continued to prove that true these past 7 years since starting.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Cosplay is, how I like to describe it, Halloween everyday without the candy! It’s about bringing life to our favorite characters through costumes. It combines so many skills like sewing, wig styling, make up, prop building, and more. It took me 6 years into cosplay before I was able to make it a part time job, and it was through content creating that my cosplays were seen. I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took awhile but others are also able to have the same opportunity as me and that’s what I really enjoy about cosplaying! I’ve learned so many new skills especially in sewing and make up that have helped me grow and even get to a point where I won awards for my creations! It really is such a fun hobby and job, I couldn’t ask for a better activity!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A go to place to show friends is always the woods near where I live! I just always enjoy the fresh air and it’s such a nice place for photos, picnics, or just taking a breather from the stress of everyday life. If it’s during the winter holidays, of course we could also visit the public places with lots of lights! For food, it’d be nice to cook some food with friends but I’m also down for Thai or Asian cuisines, and thankfully the area I live in has a lot of options!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family, friends, and partner all deserve recognition for their help in my journey as a cosplayer. My family was the ones who supported me and helped pay for things when I first started, and I honestly wouldn’t have started without their push in the right direction. My cosplay friends are always so helpful and help hype me up when sometimes I don’t feel the best, as well as help me come up with silly content ideas! Of course my partner is my biggest help at this time, cosplaying with me and helping answer any questions or help push through a tough part while creating. All these people have made my journey better and have helped me improve in more ways than one!
