We had the good fortune of connecting with Dustin Lohr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dustin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
With years of experience as a Production Director, a major part of my job was curating set designs for events, video shoots, and other projects. I fell in love with dreaming up a concept, drawing it, and building it in real life. Working for a church and seeing the impact that a design can have on someone really resonated with me. My hope was to take that passion and bring that to others. From there, DL Productions was born.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Production & Lighting Designer specializing in concert, church and corporate environments. Design has changed so much from years ago but a lot of the core principals have remained. Copy cat culture is a real thing nowadays and you have to search and look into fresh things to bring something new to the world. People want designs that help tell a story and bring connection from a stage to the audience. My hope is that with each project I have the pleasure of working on, it’s filtered through that lens.

I got my start serving as the Production Director at my local church. About every quarter and for special events I was tasked with creating a fresh design for our congregation. With limited budget and space constraints, creating fresh designs became tricky. In those seasons, I believe that’s where true creativity came out and I was able to create some of my favorite designs. That season taught me a ton about design and how to truly connect an audience to the message coming from the stage.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve lived in this small town my whole life and when I say it’s small, it’s small, so we may have to venture out a bit. Lot’s of good places just north of here so I’d take them to my favorite burger spot, Hop’s Burger Bar. Incredible craft burgers and amazing drinks. Southend Brewing is another good spot and even better when there’s live music. As you can probably tell, food and drinks are my hobby.

I live just east of NC mountains and that’s usually my families go to for a getaway. I love the quiet and the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. Good coffee is a big thing for me so scouting out some good spots is a must. My wife and I love finding rad antique/thrift stores and seeing if we can find a needle in a haystack. Asheville has a good balance of nothing/still things to do. Last but not least, we would definitely hit up the Orange Peel to watch one of our favorite bands.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This list could and should be very long but undoubtedly at the top would be my incredible wife. Any creative endeavor, thought or idea i have, she’s the first to believe in it and champion it. Truly my #1 fan. Second, would be my Creative Team at Vintage Church. I dream up all sorts of wild ideas and things I second guess we could pull off but this team surrounds it and brings it to completion every time. This place and these people have believed in me more than most should.
