We had the good fortune of connecting with Savvy B. Harn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Savvy B., have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
It’s been a long road for me with photography. I haven’t always had a lot of success and there have been more “slow seasons” than I care to admit. But What keeps me going is the fact that when I am taking pictures, there is a part of me that feels complete. I have the most supportive friends and family that tell me to keep going and there is just something in me that tells me not to give up on my passion. As long as I feel happy behind the camera and my clients are ecstatic when they get their galleries, I can’t give up on my dream.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I don’t claim to have a particular style in my photography. Instead, I like to refer to a quote from David Alan Harvey. I don’t shoot what it looks like. I shoot what it feels like. I have so many ideas for crazy, weird, artsy shoots in my head and my friends are always getting sucked into being my models. I couldn’t do it without them. Most of my clients have come from other clients I’ve shot for. I’m really proud to have a client base that comes from word of mouth and that my art can really speak for itself. It hasn’t been easy and there have been more “slow seasons” than I’d like to admit, but I always have something on the horizon. I don’t just photograph people and I’ve done my fair share of commercial and corporate work, but I feel like that keeps me well educated and on my toes. I can easily say that I can photograph almost anything! I’ve taken on jobs that were not in my wheel house to start, but I’m always confident in my work by the end of editing. I’ve learned that, taking those odd jobs here and there really teaches you a lot about yourself as a photographer and a business owner. I’ve learned more about who I really am as my own person from behind the lens of a camera than I think I ever would have otherwise. I’m self-made and driven. I go above and beyond for every client. I started from the bottom and there’s no where to go but up!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in the heart of North Carolina, there’s plenty to see and do. And being a photographer, there’s even more opportunity for impromptu photoshoots around the city. There are so many incredible places in Greensboro alone to walk around and visit that a week might not be enough! The best hole in the wall place to eat has to be Heavenly Buffalos in downtown Greensboro. They have the best wings and don’t get me started on the fries! You can’t miss it if you’re in North Carolina. After that, there’s plenty of shopping to do. JustB is right next door and then there’s the Elsewhere museum which will keep you busy for hours. Greensboro has so many amazing murals and street art around the entire city also! You can’t miss out on Sisters on Tate Street on UNCG campus. It’s a woman owned gift store full of the most beautiful jewelry in the entire state. If you’re up for the trip there’s the largest zoo in the country just 30 minutes down the road in Asheboro. While you’re there you have to see the amazing antique malls and get food at The Flying Pig. If you don’t get the cheese fries you’re missing out. If you don’t want to ride all the way down to Asheboro, you can check out the Greensboro Science Center which has an aquarium, museum and a zoo! There are tons of breweries and bars to check out. My favorites are Jake’s Billiards on Spring Garden Street and Dram and Draught outside downtown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of course, first and foremost, my incredible husband who has always pushed me to pursue my dream. He’s never told me no and has always encouraged me to keep trying and keep pushing forward. My best friends Sam, Jessi, and Lexi who always pump me up and keep me plenty busy with photoshoots and inspiration, whether it’s a cute couples session or a weird idea I’ve come up with. My best photography friend, Ashley Rose, who I can always go to for a pick me up. And lastly, Markee Williamson, another amazing photographer who I consider not only my friend but an incredible mentor who is always there for me.
