We had the good fortune of connecting with Cortney Stys and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cortney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was I wanted to do something fun and helpful for individuals to feel good about themselves with self care. With my business, I was always interested in the human body and knew I had a skill with it. Growing up I knew I wanted to help people but didn’t know what it would be. So when I knew I had a skill with talking to people and knowing about human anatomy, I got a degree in Physical Therapy and became a full-time Physical Therapist Assistant. When I knew about body sculpting and got trained in it, I wasn’t sure how I would start out with marketing the business but it would take time getting started. I thought of a side hustle in body sculpting knowing it would help people and make a little extra income. In my business, I loved how there was non-invasive treatments to help target stubborn fat areas in the body and also help with draining the lymphatic system to boost metabolism.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I am proud of my career is that I help people that injured or just need body mechanic corrections every single day with the reward of getting individuals better. Growing up, I knew human anatomy was my favorite subject in school, but not going to lie, it was a tough subject to learn in school. I remember when I got denied PTA school to get into the day program which was all in person, not only was it hard to get in but it was also competitive with hundreds of other students applying to school. It was devastating not getting in the first time, so what I learned is that there was a hybrid program for in person/online and I got into that program which made me so ecstatic! Going into learning about that program, I knew it was going to be rough because it was accelerated so I had to buckle down on study habits I’ve never learned before. Struggling with ADD and staying focused on the program, my passion was there and I knew I wanted to be the best PTA I could be for people down the road. Patience was going to be my biggest obstacle since the program felt like a life time but it was only 18 months and knowing it will end eventually. After passing my Physical Therapy Board Exam in 2019, I didn’t think I was smart enough or good enough since the first time around I didn’t prepare myself mentally for the 4 hour long exam. After passing that board exam, that’s when the confidence came out and I was ready to start my career. Going into a side hustle with body sculpting, I had to go back to the basics of being patient and that everything comes with time and hard work. For anyone thinking they aren’t good enough or not patient enough with starting a career and/or side hustle, it’s a matter of knowing your self worth and finding your skills.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to town and was visiting Arizona, I would definitely show them different restaurants with amazing food in downtown phoenix, scottsdale or even gilbert. Sometimes the hidden gems are worth taking people to. Maple and Ash in scottsdale would be a great place to try out since the environment is amazing with endless amount of food, plus you can dress fancy and feel sexy! Some of the most exciting places to check out would be Sedona or DA Ranch in Sedona because the outdoors is something where you’re out in nature while drinking wine or being in nature.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a shout out to a couple people that helped me make my side hustle happen. One of them is the trainer who helped trained me in body sculpting who is named Addie. She helped me get started because she knew I was good at learning the human body and I would be successful in the business with that. Another person I want to give recognition would be from a podcast and book author Mel Robbins. I’ve been listening to her podcasts for a little while now and her stories are all about building motivation and finding purpose in your life which have helped me think about how to build my life.
