We had the good fortune of connecting with Aasha Marie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aasha, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is keeping a strong relation with God and keeping honest, creative, real people around me. All of those factors contribute to building my character as an artist and my brand. God reminds me that he gave me the gift and I am to be a good representative of my talents. The community keeps me humble, challenged and encouraged through all of life’s circumstances (highs, lows, hard blows and no’s).

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been surrounded by music my whole life. I grew up in the black church with the sounds of organs blasting, drums hitting, choirs soaring and preachers hollering over a microphone. The whole experience was electric, energetic, powerful and very spiritually moving. My immediate family sings and is super creative so it was easy to get involved in. I grew up singing and directing choirs and playing the organ in church. However, striking out in my own as an artist didn’t come until much later after being encouraged by a college friend to pursue it, knowing that God had my back all the way and that friend was right. I faced many challenges being Christian, people telling me to switch up my message/method, people not keeping their word to me, people saying they would be there/show up for videos/projects/shows and then ghosting me, being a woman in male-dominated industry. I’ve been through it all, but I realize God gave me this gift and I must push through to use all of my God given talents with fervor and patience and my gifts will make room for me, in fact, my gifts have made room for me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First off Chicago is a great food city. First off we’d start on the south side of the city, where I’m a native! We’d start in Hyde park at litehouse grill to get a jerk chicken fettuccine Alfredo bowl. The , we’d go downtown for deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s but you have to get the buttercrust! Then we’d head to Papas Cache or Jibaritos y Mas and get Puerto Rican food. As far as entertainment if it’s summer and Covid isn’t a threat, we’d go to the music festivals in Millenium Park, the Silver room festival on the south side in Hyde Park then maybe hang out at Aster Hall after having a spa/massage day at Mario Tricoci! These are just a few of my favorite things to do in Chicago.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out my friends and family who have encouraged me in my musical journey. Specifically my husband Justin, my brother Nova, my friend Jasmine, Trell, Markice, Chetta, and many many more who reassure me and affirm everyday that I can do this! Thank you all!
