We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlyn Vanderhaeghe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caitlyn, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. I was the youngest of four kids. My mom is a natural health expert so growing up I was surrounded by everything natural health. Living with a health advocate like our mom, we were encouraged to ask questions, not accept standard doctrine, and to seek alternative solutions when possible.
My academic background is in Education and Social Sciences, completing both a BA and a B.Ed. I worked in supply chain management and ingredient sourcing for over ten years. This fueled my curiosity for innovative ingredients and natural products to help promote a healthy lifestyle.
When I had children, I was so dissatisfied with the choice of kid’s nutritional supplements on the market that I had to do something about it. I saw a need for a children’s line of nutritional supplements that wasn’t full of junk and still tasted awesome. With KidStar Nutrients, I can help educate parents about kids’ nutrition, nutrient deficiencies, and stress the importance of clean nutrients.
What should our readers know about your business?
KidStar Nutrients makes clean nutritional supplements for kids and families. We believe that nutrients should contain only the ingredients needed and nothing more. In two years since launching, during a global pandemic, we have been listed in health food stores, grocery chains, and national retail chains. We’ve been getting amazing feedback from parents and customers who have seen positive changes in their kids’ health.
How we got our business to where we are today was built on relationships and our extensive marketing efforts focused on education. On top of the usual challenges that startups face, we had additional challenges building our business. It is a lengthy process to get natural products licensed in Canada. On top of that, it took longer to get our products approved due to Covid delays. To make high quality, clean nutritional supplements that taste great, have no sugar, and no junk, means a lot more R&D to think outside the box from the status quo. We believe that doing things right takes longer, but it’s always worth it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend came to Vancouver for a week, we would spend the day at the beach and go for a long walk at Spanish Banks. I would take them shopping on Robson Street and then finish the evening at my favorite place to eat, which is Nightingale. We would have to go to Whistler for a few nights for mountain biking, hiking, and take the Peak-to-Peak gondola for the amazing views. We’d finish off the week by taking the ferry across to the Sunshine Coast and relax lakeside at the cabin.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Starting a new business is a rollercoaster. I work with a great team and the support I get from my family and friends makes the ride smoother.
