We had the good fortune of connecting with Victor & Gilliane Carracedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victor & Gilliane, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When we think about risk, we tend to connect it to something negative or something to avoid. Risk for us is stepping out of our comfort zone, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. We see it as an opportunity to learn, grow and gain more experience. In life we always have to make choices; sometimes we’ll fail and make mistakes. As much as we would like to be in control of every possible outcome, the reality is that there are certain things we can’t control, and that’s ok. So the only real risk is to not choose for fear of the unknown.
Starting Fusteira Wood Designs is one of those risks we took. What started out as a creative outlet during the pandemic, became something that we both passionately wanted to pursue. The road hasn’t always been easy, and we are learning along the way. But we both know that taking the risk of starting a small business was the right choice.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are a husband and wife team based out of Central California, both with creative backgrounds. My wife Gilliane is an artist who discovered her love for line work and geometric patterns while attending FIDM in Los Angeles, where she also obtained her Visual Communications degree. As for me, my passion for music and more specifically for drums was very clear from an early age. In 2011, I was given the opportunity to move from Spain to the US to continue my music education. After graduating in 2013, I moved to Los Angeles, where Gill and I met a couple years later.
Aside from music, I have always been fascinated with making wooden pieces for the house or music studio in my spare time. I started posting some of the stuff I made on social media, and got some positive feedback. Throughout all my builds, Gill would always help me out or give me ideas with the designs. From there, we started thinking about the idea of opening our own small woodworking business. Due to lack of time we kept putting it off. Then the pandemic happened! We found ourselves with a lot of free time and decided to bring our idea to life. We packed all our stuff, moved three hours north of Los Angeles to a small town called Tulare, and set up our small wood shop. That’s how Fusteira was born; a small family based business that strives to bring people together with well thought out designs and personalized wooden pieces.
This journey has been such a big learning curve for the both of us; from setting up the business, to learning new woodworking skills, and balancing all other responsibilities. Although it has been very difficult and frustrating at times, we can definitely say that it has been so rewarding and worth it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in Tulare, CA which is a close drive to the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park; definitely a must place to visit. There is also Lake Kaweah and Slick Rock Recreation Area that have been our favorite spots to go adventuring with our dog. For some great coffee, food and awesome vibes; we love going to Component Coffee Lab. If you are in the mood for some dessert or ice cream specifically, our favorite spot is Rosa Brothers Milk Company; they have the creamiest ice cream we’ve ever had!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We want to say thank you to our friends and family who have been very encouraging from the very beginning. From sharing our posts, helping us with photoshoots, purchasing our items, etc. We would not have been able to do this without their love and support. Also, special thanks to every customer who gave us the opportunity and trusted us to create something special for them. We truly appreciate you all!
