We had the good fortune of connecting with Aimee Blake and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aimee, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
(Aimee) Our first location was located in North Scottsdale. I started as the owner/operator. It was always a dream of mine to own my own business. As we got busier and busier at Sugar Sugar, we started to see more clients coming to us from out of town. People would ask where our Chicago locations were or ask when we were coming to Dallas or Denver or Detroit. But it wasn’t until we started noticing quite a few clients get right off the plane to come see us. That was when William and I spoke about sharing our brand nationally.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
(Aimee) Our sugaring hair removal is what sets us apart. Sugaring is a natural, less painful alternative to waxing. As more customers have become label readers, it has become increasingly popular in the last few years. The results last longer than wax, without ingrown or irritation. But we are especially proud of our training. We apply our sugar at room temperature without sticks or muslin (less waste too). We have a number of clients move from other states. They’ll often tell us our Sugarists’ technique is the best they’ve ever enjoyed…or that their results are even better than their typical esthetician.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
(William) Scottsdale is always great. It’s a vacation destination within a larger, working city. So the people watching is amazing! We always take visitors to Fat Ox to eat. It’s one of the gems of Scottsdale. Phoenix has amazing tacos everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Tacos at La Santisima are a lunch must do. Maybe then a trip to Sedona.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
(Aimee) Well my business partner and husband deserves as much credit as I do, William has been along for the whole ride. He owned a boutique advertising agency in Seattle. He’s worked behind the scenes building the brand and working through the technology while I’ve perfected our systems and training. Our skill sets complement each other well. So it’s worked out very well for Sugar Sugar™.
