We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandra Montaño and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alejandra, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My work helps preserve and celebrate Mexican-American culture through art, storytelling, and community connection. Through paintings, events, and collaborations, I create spaces where people feel seen, represented, and connected to their roots, while supporting local artists, musicians, and cultural traditions for future generations.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is rooted in Mexican-American culture, storytelling, faith, and identity. I create bold, emotional paintings inspired by my upbringing in Barrio Viejo, my family, and the experiences that shaped me. What sets my work apart is that it blends personal history with cultural symbolism, mixing realism with expressive color and intuitive elements.

My journey as an artist wasn’t linear. Life, responsibilities, and self-doubt pulled me away from painting at times, but I always came back to it because it’s who I am. Losing my father in 2024 pushed me to pursue art more seriously after he reminded me to “keep painting.”

I’m most proud of building a career that feels authentic to my roots and seeing people connect emotionally with my work. More than anything, I want people to feel seen, connected, and proud of who they are when they experience my art. While my work is deeply inspired by my Mexican heritage, the emotions behind it — resilience, family, hope, identity, and love — are universal. I want my paintings to bring people joy, beauty, and a sense of connection, especially during difficult times.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to Tucson for a week, we’d probably spend most of our time downtown and on 4th Avenue — going to galleries, vintage shops, murals, local markets, and wherever there’s live music happening. I’d take them through Barrio Viejo because it’s such an important part of Tucson’s history and a huge inspiration for my work.

We’d eat a lot of Mexican food, grab coffee downtown, catch live music at night, and make sure to watch at least one sunset on the west side overlooking the Tucson Mountains. We’d definitely go wherever there are community events happening too. Tucson feels small in the best way — artists support each other, everybody knows somebody, and there’s always something creative going on if you’re connected to the community.

Tucson’s culture, art, music, and desert all feel deeply connected, and that’s what makes it special to me.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d dedicate my shoutout first to my parents. I grew up surrounded by art, creativity, and culture, and they always encouraged me to keep painting and believe in what I was creating, even before I believed in it myself. Their support shaped so much of who I am as an artist today.

My son has also been a huge source of motivation and inspiration for me. Watching him grow while pursuing my own dreams has pushed me to keep going, work harder, and lead by example.

And of course, my collectors and community deserve so much credit too. Every person who has supported my work, shared it, attended a show, commissioned a piece, or simply encouraged me along the way has helped make this journey possible.
