We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexander Julian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexander, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
An irresistible urge and economic needs…the economy was in a terrible place (gas shortage, etc) in the early/mid 70s. I had “test marketed” successfully with a dozen great men’s specialty stores, and my designs were selling without my name…what I consider the true test.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was the first American fashion designer to concentrate on creating the fabrics for my line. The Fashion Press all said that I “single handedly brought color into modern American menswear”.

My goal was and always will be to create functional and visually appealing design (I’ve designed over 150 different product catagories!), that are timeless.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Your day begins around 10:00 a.m. in nearby Carefree Arizona at Sonoran Desert EBikes, where you will take a 2-hour EBike guided tour through the Sonoran Desert and marvel at the mountain views, many types of cacti and indigenous wildlife.

Next will be a 20-minute drive to North Scottsdale for a casual lunch at The Living Room on Market Street in D.C. Ranch.

Grab a table outside and enjoy custom cocktails, an extensive wine list and tasty treats such as a wide variety of Sushi rolls, Bang Bang shrimp, Strawberry Gorgonzola salad, or their house prime rib.

After lunch take a 15-minute drive just across the Scottsdale border into North Phoenix where you will visit the world’s largest Musical Instrument Museum M.I.M. Take a self-guided tour of over 4,000 musical instruments including from around the world making note to stop at theperformer’s gallery featuring items such as John Lennon’s piano and Buddy Rich’s drum set.

What is needed next is a swim and or massage at one of Scottsdale/Phoenix’s world renown resorts such as The Fairmont Princess, The Phoenician or the Westin Kierland.

It’s now time to get washed up and dressed in what the locals call “country club chic” and take a 10-minute Uber ride to The Americano Restaurant where Chef Scott Conant is at the helm of this modern supper club style restaurant with it’s the open kitchen and wood fire grill.

Begin with one of their signature cocktails such as Versace on the floor, Drunken Wifey or Nitro expressed Martini.

Time to order dinner and good luck choosing between the Tagliatelle Wagyu Bolognese (all of the pasta is made in house), the Icelandic salmon or the spiced mallard duck breast.

Save room however for a carrot cake that will change your world and/or a 30-year Taylor Fladgate tawny port.

As you Uber back to your resort, you can look back and now know why the Scottsdale/Phoenix area is one of the fasting growing markets in the U.S.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
John Alofs and his beautiful wife Viktoria and family! John is the founder/owner of ROI Eyewear in Phoenix, who distributes my eyewear Internationally. He’s a super guy, genuine, highest integrity, and a great jazz drummer!
