We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Slater and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Allison, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Before I started my own business, I was stuck in the corporate world of healthcare, medical insurance and desk work in a small office that had zero windows. I didn’t have a passion for what I was doing and ultimately didn’t have a college degree that would open a lot of doors for me to pursue something else. After encouragement from my husband and family members, I started my photography business as a way to pursue a life and work environment that I had control over and was passionate about.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my photography business having never picked up a professional camera. I don’t necessarily recommend starting a business without having a prior knowledge of how to do it, but it did 100% force me to learn how to photograph and run a business very quickly. Over the years, my editing style has grown into my own – being a reflection of the warmth and light that my home state of Arizona so often provides. My niche and brand slowly formed over the years, with originally photography all types of sessions and weddings to now being more niched down into adventurous elopement days and intimate wedding days. I’m passionate about enabling my couples to TRULY experience their wedding day together. By them having the freedom to experience their day exactly how they want to, it lets them be fully present all while making incredible memories with one another. Their day is an experience, not just a ceremony with ten extra minutes for some portraits. Their dream day might look like hiking up a ridge line before sunrise to say their vows or traveling to one of their bucket-list location to officially say “I do”. Whatever ways they want to experience their day, I’m there for it every step of the way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite spots in the Phoenix area: Hash Kitchen for breakfast Joyride Tacohouse for lunch Sunset hike in the Superstition Wilderness area Dinner at Pedal Haus Drinks at the White Rabbit Night time hike at South Mountain
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ultimately, my husband, sister and brother in law encouraged me to quit the job I hated in the healthcare industry and instead pursue a job based around creativity and the outdoors.
