We had the good fortune of connecting with Amaya Burkhart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amaya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have loved to perform since I was just 5 years old. Over the years I have taken part in countless plays, musicals, choirs, and performance troops. As a Disney fan as well, it only made sense to become a party princess performer. I joined a local company and absolutely fell in love with the job. But as a POC actor, I was limited in how many roles I could take on. I started Pixie Dusted Party to create more opportunity for myself and allow POC children to see themselves in their favorite characters.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Each child is unique, and I want to reflex that in each experience that I provide. When a client is booking a party, they get to choose from an extensive list of activities to create a custom celebration for their child. In the early days of my career, I found a lot of the default activities just weren’t keeping the children’s attention. A custom party schedule helps me to know what the birthday child will want to take part in, which is the most important thing.
I also found that parents book party performers to take the hosting pressure off of them, so I decided to take that a step further. After a party is booked, the parent is sent a Party Planning PDF. Inside is links for decorations for their party theme, local vendors, and other helpful tips to provide an effortless party planning experience from start to finish.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite place to spend the day is Highland Yard Vintage in Chandler. It’s an enormous antique mall complete a restaurant with the most delicious barbecue and cookies! Round 1 in Glendale has a little of everything- arcade, trampolines, roller skating, karaoke, bowling, etc. When the weather is nice I love to shop around Downtown Glendale and have tea at The Spicery in Our 1895 Home (I host princess tea parties once a month!). I love my sweets so Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream and The Boyer Bakery in Surprise are a must visit. If you love theater, I recommend ASU Gammage, Arizona Broadway Theatre, Theaterworks, Valley Youth Theatre, and Spotlight Youth Theatre. You have to experience Sedona at least once, and a Pink Jeep Tour is a fun way to do it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friends and family have been so supportive of my business- from assisting behind the scenes to performing with me!
