Meet Angel Sanchez | Makeup Artist/Creative Director/Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Angel Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process on starting my own business was challenging because it’s not something that I knew a lot about and it was definitely intimidating for fear of doing it incorrectly. It’s always something I’ve wanted to do but where do I begin. It was one of those things where I had to tell myself, do your research, go talk to your friends who own business, and figure it out. You either sink or swim but you lose nothing trying.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I got to where I am today through life’s experiences. I went to Cosmo school which led me to makeup. I worked for plenty of makeup stores and companies and gained experience with customers and clients. Life often brought me in and out of the industry but I always found my way back. I was working my 9-5 and I just woke up one day and thought to myself that I’m unhappy and I should just put my back against the wall and figure this out because I’d be in a happier portion than I am now and if it doesn’t work out, at least I know I tried.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For brunch, I’d bring someone over to Hash Kitchen and get a flight of mimosas. I’d take them to Down Town Phoenix to the Pemberton and explore the bars and have dinner at saint pasta, they have the best pasta. I’d tell them to explore some of the speakeasy type of bars within downtown and Arcadia Phoenix. If they wanted something fun to do, I’d take them to Main Event or maybe to listen to live music at The Duce. There’s a lot to see up north as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel like someone who first inspired me and I really looked up to his work before we even knew eachother was David Velasquez. He’s a photographer based in Arizona.
As we became friends, I did often confide in him and his experience within the industry. We do different things but makeup and photography go hand in hand.
