We had the good fortune of connecting with Cory Otterstrom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cory, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
When I was in High School, I took a Photography class as an “easy elective” and I ended up loving it! I remember when I was out skateboarding with my friends, I was always the one taking pictures and taking videos for their Social Media and people were loving it! I felt like it was the only thing I was good at, so after high school, I decided to pursue it more and go to college for Film and Multimedia Production and I couldn’t be happier!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is more of a darker/moody style that I really enjoy. I normally shoot more at night and in a more urban environment. Recently I am getting into more video production because of my major, and I love meeting the different business owners and learning their story and turning their story into a video that impacts other peoples lives! I have learned that art is subjective and hear what people have to say, but don’t take it to personally. Focus on the art that YOU like and make sure you take the time to listen to the GOOD things people have to say.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some main areas that I would take them is Downtown Phoenix to check out the artist district and eat at some of the local restaurants and breweries in the area.

Checking out Papago Park on the way! I would also check out downtown Flagstaff and go to one of my favorite Breweries, Mother Road, and talk to some of the coolest most down to earth people I have ever talked to!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I think about it, I would like to shout out to my parents for believing in me and supporting me in following my dreams. I would also like to shout out to my friends for really being interested and involved in what I am doing next. Lastly, I want to thank my school and the people I have met on my internships for teaching me everything I know now!
