We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Keller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is essential to success in business, especially when you’re an entrepreneur. I’m not talking about spontaneous risky decision making, but rather calculated risks that take you out of your comfort zone to achieve a goal you’ve set for yourself or your business. Throughout my life and career, there have been a number of times where I’ve decided to leave a comfortable situation to pursue a goal. And, I have never once regretted my decision or looked back. A few examples that stand out are when I left a successful corporate career in high-tech public relations to start my own PR consulting company, or when I pushed myself to move from behind-the-scenes media coach to on-camera style expert, or when I started MomStyleLab.com over seven years ago in a relatively undefined space. Were these decisions scary at first, albeit financially and personally? Sure! But, as my husband (and biggest supporter) always tells me, “You should go for it – what’s the worst thing that can happen?” However, successful risk taking is best done with at least some planning and forethought. Before leaving a secure job to start your own business, set a goal to have a certain amount of money saved and have a general idea of what you plan to do. I believe that at least 90% of the time you won’t regret taking a risk that helps you grow or eventually leads you to achieve a seemingly out-of-reach goal. Another tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from people you know. Growing a support network of experts and inspiring people is so important. Plus, remember that big successes don’t happen overnight or without some missteps. As the old saying goes, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a style expert, I run a fashion & lifestyle blog (momstylelab.com), serve as an on-air style contributor, and write freelance stories for local and national publications. I’ve worn a lot of different hats during my career, from PR rep and event planner to writer and spokesperson, so I bring a multi-faceted perspective to the table when I’m working on a project. My journey to where I am today has been a gradual evolution, not always easy, but I can reflect on everything I’ve done and see how each step helped me grow. As for important lessons I’ve learned along the way — the clearer the vision, the easier it is to achieve your goals. And, during the times when your vision gets a little foggy, keep moving forward and watch for opportunities to grow your business in new directions, as you might discover a new focus area. At the end of the day, I hope that I help and inspire people through my words to live their best life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A relaxing day at the Sanctuary Spa is a must-do! They have so many amazing treatments to choose from and I love their open-air rooms. We would check out the local foodie scene on the daily, since we are lucky to have a long list of incredible restaurants here. A few of my favorite spots for dining out, include Prado, Toca Madera, The Henry, and the Wrigley Mansion (the views can’t be beat!). A day trip to see the gorgeous Sedona red rocks, including a meal at Mariposa and a Pink Jeep Tour, would be on the itinerary, plus a boat ride at Canyon Lake. My best friend loves to shop, so we’d also spend a day hitting the outdoor shopping areas, including Biltmore Fashion Park, Kierland Commons and Old Town Scottsdale.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband for always encouraging me to think big and supporting my ventures. Plus, to my always supportive and inspiring friends – Afi Maita, Angela Zdrale and Lisa Moore – who recently started The Power of 3 Consulting to offer an exciting approach to restyling your image and closet!
